Leather Source?
« on: January 15, 2017, 05:43:30 AM »
Hello. Need some info on good leather for pouches, all types for hand and machine sewing. Someone had said Whickett & Craig. Can anyone give details on what type and thickness. Any other sources. Thanks.

Sources are plentiful and I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions. If you do not have it I would suggest a copy of Tim Albert's Recreating the 18th Century Hunting Pouch It should answer your other questions and more.

Ditto, TC's book will answer your questions and a few you haven't thought of yet. :)

Thanks Guys. I have the book. I was looking for more answers from those who have used leathers from the different company's and what results they have gotten, good or bad. I know the 2 persons who answered and I know they have done many great items and a ton of knowledge, far beyond my talents.  Thanks.

Swans,
W&C will take your purchase down to the thickness you want.

Give a look at https://furandhide.com/products/categories/leather-elk-and-moose
They carry different leather. Check the listings on the left.

Machine sewing leather is problematical unless you use:

A) an industrial machine capable of single stitch speeds that can handle 3-4 oz veg tans ...
Tandy has a pneumatic machine capable of this, a typical sewing machine is not...

B) some thin garment type leathers can be  sewn on a heavy duty, professional grade dress makers machine...but these leathers are not suitable for hunting pouches generally...

Sources for 3 to 4 oz veg tans are plenty...Tandy sells cheaper sides, and even their better grades of Craftsman Oak was on sale a week or so ago, it may be still? Wickett and Craig have great stuff...you can search the offerings of Leather Unlimited and Herman Oak too...

Unless you plan to go into production, the machines are probably not a good investment.

I agree...they cost  quite a bit...
for what its worth. I still do all my work by hand...
to me its the best way I can think of to keep the tradition alive and well..
