antique screw plate
« on: April 10, 2009, 12:52:14 AM »
Bought of evil-bay but not received yet, an antique screw plate with taps (rare to find the taps in my experience).  I think this one will be of useful sizes- hope so!  Not a jewelers size, that's for sure.  This might be the ticket for my period gunsmithing kit, and, if lucky, to refurbish originals with missing screws.

I've also been picking up planes and found a scrub plane that has a rounded bottom, fore and aft as well as in profile.  This one might be the perfect ticket for roughing out the scoop in cheekpieces quickly.

Very nice. Hmmm, I'm thinking of a hand forged lock with one of a kind hand made screws.  ;)

God Bless,

Can you say something about the pitch of the taps? Would like to compare that with the old WW threads, and with those on screw plates I have.

Might do that Rich, but I may need it for a coupla years.  ;D

Gramps,
I found a screw plate very much like one in the top photo at a junk sale. I once thought about making taps to match each hole, but didn't know how original taps were made. Thanks to Rich, that might be an option.

God Bless,
J.D.

Gramps, I'm drooling!  Will measure pitch when I get the screw plate.  Looks coarse to me.

Rich - Great find!

I'm curious about the cross section of the hand made taps.  Are they just filed off on two sides or gouged out or ?

Let us know how they work as compared to modern stuff.  Thanks..................Lynn
