Given its a closed show, how does one get on the list if they wish to attend? I wanted to make it last year but had to work.
I am the Lead Historian/Firearms Specialist at Rock Island Auction Co., but I am here out of my own personal interests in muzzle loading and history.

You can just go. You can tell them you're my guest if you want.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Rambling Historian,

Your more than welcome to attend. I imagine Curt will comment soon and I'm pretty sure he will extend an invitation.

The first time I went I just walked in and threw a fiver in the mason jar.  Having no association with Mr. Brooks at the time, I was not asked to leave. :)

Sounds good. As of now I have no other plans that weekend, so I'll hopefully make it over for Saturday.

You are more than welcome to attend. It is a closed show only in the sense that it is not advertised to the general public.  Anyone with an interest in American Longrifles will not be turned away.

Some of the fellows start to pack up around noon, so don't dawdle if you're going Saturday.

Interesting we want more people to become interested. But yet we discourage the public from attending. Am I missing something? Oldtravler

This show has a tremendous turn out. 80+ tables I believe with all quality displays. All of the attendees are very educated with what they are looking at. The common  public would be bored out of their minds at this show. Also you might consider if you let your average idiots attend this show many of the folks that bring their cherished collection would opt out as they don't care to have their irreplaceable guns handled by careless people who don't know what they are looking at.
I myself have always enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of this show. I can lay out my display then take off and view other displays and talk with very knowledgeable folks for hours and never have to worry about anything going missing on my table.

Well your right as always. The general public is a bunch of idiots. Remember when my Dad took me to a gun show. All modern guns except for this gentleman named Ron Blakeslee who had a couple of flintlock rifles on his table. If it wouldn't have been for him. This idiot never would have experienced the charm these guns have for so many. Oldtravler

I know there are folks that start leaving a little after noon on Sat. There are some of us that hang around . I along with some others stay Saturday night and head home Sunday morning.
Mike I talked to you last year about a New England fowler I have . I'm going to bring it along for you to take a look at. It has the kind of lines I think you would like.   Jim

Having run a longrifle show for 8 years I can tell you some of the problems with openly inviting the general public.

Antique gun collectors are very concerned about who/how their 4 and 5 figure guns are handled and its hard to keep an eye on everything on your table. These folks are often reluctant to set-up at a "open" show.

The same applies to Contemporary builders that are displaying guns that may belong to whomever commissioned the builder. He may have borrowed it back for the show or may be delivering it at the show.

Often the people that attend open gun shows are not at all knowledgeable about gun show etiquette (never, never handle someones displayed items without their permission. Never photograph displays/guns without permission etc)

Many/most longrifle shows are where old friends with similiar interests meet. The table holder enjoys leaving his table and "making the rounds" to see what is for sale, who is there etc. They feel much more comfortable asking their neighboring table holder to "watch my table" for a few minutes when they know that the show attendee's are interested in longrifles and probably has more respect for them than the general public.

Until you have seen some of the general public's innocent fondling of your 200 year old flint rifle (without permission) you won't understand the fear it puts in you.

Dennis you are very right. When I was young you learned not to touch anything that wasn't yours period.  There's always a few that ruin it for everyone else. When I attended the C.L.A show an other's the last couple of years. Several collectors said that I could handle there guns. I chose not too! It's called respect for other people's property. Sad thing is these are the type of shows that I learn so much from. So much better than books. IMHO. Oldtravler

Same thing at car shows, lots of people don't teach their kids to not climb on or touch the cars. I ounce watched another kid when I was growing up race one of his Hot Wheels cars along the side of a Ford coupe and leave a long scratch. Even as a kid I knew that was going to be a big problem!

I am hoping to make it sometime on Saturday. Might not be able to though since I definitely don't plan on taking my two year old son.
