fitting a lock to a round barrel
« on: January 20, 2017, 04:33:30 AM »
I've got a question about fitting a lock to a round barrel. Since the lock bolster is flat, is it preferable to lap it to the contour of the barrel?

I would file a flat spot on the barrel where the lock bolster mates up.

Definitely file the side of the barrel flat.  The other way is not historically correct and makes no sense, especially since most round barrels have a "wedding band" at the breech end that would have to be inlet into the lock bolster.  Every old round barrel I've seen had a flat spot on the lock side.

That does make sense. Thank you.
