anyonde using a Dale Storey peep sight? now with pics
« on: February 03, 2017, 03:41:37 PM »
I received a TVM .54 cal made by Jack Gardner for Christmas.  the sight on it is a original Dale Storey peep sight, I was just wondering if anyone has one on their rifle and how they like it? I have not had the chance to shoot it yet but I do have peep sights on all my lever action rifles so I think I will like it.

Nope, out here they are illegal to hunt with during primitively rifle season, and against the rules for primitive target matches, so they aren't very popular.

they are legal here in NY, I do not punch paper to much other then to sight in a new gun I am primarily a deer hunter.  will be using this rife and peep combo this year here in the Adirondacks.  just though some others might be using this sight and would have liked to hear what they say.

i'll take a pic and post it, Dale made mule ear locks, peep sights and muzzleloaders which were pretty popular.

I'm interested in seeing what this peep sight looks like as well.  PLS e-mail if you have trouble posting it.

it is a very simple sight with simple windage and elevation, Dale lived in made rifles, mule locks and this style peep sight in his shop in WY.

yes built an EXCELLENT mule ear lock last I heard he was not doing well. a local author/writer in my area had Dale build him a rifle with mule ear lock and then had him make a peep sight for a TVM rifle which I was lucky enough to buy.

For hunting when the light gets bad a small eye cup is easier to pick up than a "ghost ring" because the whole sight vanishes. The hole still needs to be fairly large about .100"
This was inspired by a sight base I saw on an original perc  Hawken pictured in a coffee table gun book..

Just my opinion, but any "mule ear" locks i ever saw, didn't have a drum to fool with. Were side locks. Dale'e locks just appear to have a "mule ear" hammer. I have several mule ear locks and none of them have a drum. Just my thoughts. Mikeh

Tks - I remember seeing these now.

Mule ear locks (side slappers) do not have drums that I've ever seen as the nipple is threaded into the side of the barrel, just as an underhammer lock rifle has the nipple threaded into the bottom flat of the barrel.

Mikeh,
I never implied that I had one of Dales Mule Ear sidelocks, I have his peep sight , the rifle in the picture is obviously  nipple and drum...

Picked up one of Dale's mule ear locks off eBay a few years back. I think I paid $85 for it. Purchased another from an ALR member for about the same price.  I donated one to a gunmaker at our club who is now using it for this years gun raffle.  Kept this one for myself for one of my future projects.

There is no half-cock notch in Dale's lock. The builder making the raffle gun used Dale's lock in his competition rifle when he was younger and says that it is very fast.

What Log Cabin sells is a copy of a Spence sight. I have one I bought from them years ago on my .40 Vincent.

Galudwig, thats what i was talking about. That's a mighty fine lock. Fast is right! The only difference in mine is the hammer spring. I use a flat one. Thanks for the pics. Mikeh

I can't get Log Cabin's site to kick up that Spence sight. Maybe not in the catalog?

They don't have them listed on the website.  They have them in store though.  I've seen them there and at their booth at Friendship.  I'd call them and ask for it.

I got one from Log Cabin a few months ago.  I had to call the order in.  The reason they gave for not listing it in the catalog was their supplier is kind of hit and miss with supplying stock.
