If it's for you I would put the sight on a small thin magnet and slide it up the barrel till you have the best clear-sighted picture possible. Pretty sure I need to finish my build soon as it's sliding farther up the barrel as my eyes get older ;D

I use the same method as Joe with both myself and clients.   When you can just barely resolve the rear sight notch, that is where to stop.   Otherwise, the rear sight will be just behind the front sight.  ;D     Seriously,   I must use a Merit disk to see the sights and target.    As a practical matter,  I put the rear sight either just behind or just in front of the balance point.

When I build a rifle for my self, I take the gun out doors and find a position for the rear sight that I can see about as good as possible , then mark it and cut the dovetail 1/2 inch forward of that when installing the sight to allow for further aging.

Seeing for many years I only built spec LRs, a decision had to be made on a number of  stock dims and where to locate the rear sight.

Using various lengths and weights of swamped bbls, tried the rear sight  either to the rear or forward of the hand at the balance point.  Decided on the forward location and never rec'd any complaint from buyers on this location and in fact, rec'd some compliments  This rear sight location is also perfect for my "old eyes". Because of the different swamped bbls used, there was a slight variation of the rear sight location, but nothing major......Fred
