I was wondering how you guys would grade this piece of maple.
I don't know maple well enough.
If it were a Pecatonica stock what grade do you think they would give it?

Wow! Tight curl through the entire stock. No pro but I'd definitely say 4-5.

Very pretty.

Is the barrel channel off set to make a left handed stock? Is the channel undersized enough for a variety of barrels. IF it is pigeon holed to a specialized use that may effect the value, it that is where this was going.

Lots of curl for sure. Not very deep in the but end might affect it's use on some projects.

Very pretty piece of wood.

I agree about the butt end. It lookss a little shallow to me, but looks perfect for a North Carolina Piedmont Salem gun in the Vogler tradition.

Ed Wenger, what do you think?

In any event, it has beautiful curl the whole length.

when you say shallow, what does that mean exactly?

when you inlet the but plate, depending on the build, you might have to move it forward and since the toe line is already established the toe of the butt might be below the already established toe line. If your build will be using a shorter or maybe a deep cresent but you might be OK . If you have not purchased the blank yet I would lay a pattern on the side of the stock and see how it sizes up.

Justin just for quick reference. If you have the butt plate that you want to use. Hold it along the end an see if u got enough wood for proper fitting. In simple terms. Then figure your drop you want. With the barrel inlet done it should be easy to see. Mike

"Shallow" means the vertical measurement of the butt.

Irregardless of what grade is slapped on it, it's a very curly, beautiful piece of wood. but, at 4-1/4" buttstock depth, it wouldn't fit any of the buttplates I use and it could even be less than 4-1/4" depending on how much wood has to be removed to attain the desired LOP. As was said, perhaps a SMR could be made from it.....Fred

I was hoping that I might be able to get a fullstock hawken with a deep crescent buttplate out of it if I am careful. Looks like it is right at 4 1/2" at the butt, and it is cut for a 1" straight barrel. What style do you think would be best with that barrel and this stock? I couldn't pass the super deal up. I got this stock and a 36" Green Mountain 50 cal barrel for $200!

Wow, hard to beat that price. Hopefully you can make the full-stock Hawken out of it.

Based on the going price for a GM barrel like that, if you can find one, you got the stock for under $50. Buy a lotto ticket, you're on a roll my man!

Hawken buttpates are usually about 4 1/2" tall. The Track catalog pictures of the deep crescent buttplates are 4 5/8, 4 9/16 (my note says 4 7/8 now), 5 5/16 (their "longest") and 4 7/16". You can shorten them up for a shorter length of pull, and I'd recommend about 13 1/2" LOP for a fullstock. That stock looks like it would have a 14" LOP or more if you used it all.

Here is a fullstock Hawken I built from a TOW kit. .58 caliber, 1 x 36" barrel, buttplate is BP-Hawk-L-I. I cut the stock to 13 5/8" LOP and the butt plate is cut to 4.3" tall. I wanted it shorter, but there was not enough wood to have a decent sized butt plate.

Justin, you may know that Hatchet Jack has this fullstock flint Hawken now. You can ask D. Taylor Sapergia about it. He got it a couple of years ago and has probably put 5,000 rounds through it by now. If you haven't seen it in person, you could probably see him at a shoot and handle it.

I think I may have fired that rifle, now that I think about it. I am pretty sure Hatchet Jack had it at Heffley Creek shoot year before last.
