Author Topic: Planks w/barrel channel and ramrod drilled (Read 7550 times)

Planning my next build.

After 1 precarve I think I'd rather work from a plank.

I see some of the wood suppliers will drill the ramrod hole and inlet some of the popular barrels.

I'm sure neither task is complete rocket science. But I think it'd give me a good "head start".

Does anyone use such services to start stocking a rifle??

Are there any "issues" with doing so??

I don't have much in the way of power tools..No router or anything to speed up the barrel channel. I think starting that way would save a fair bit of time and I can lay out the rest from there...

Just wanna seek guidance and make sure that's not a bad idea...

Dave Rase does great work for a reasonable price. saves a lot of time.

I do all of my guns that way. As stated, Dave Rase is very good, so is Mark Weader.

West coast David Rase, east coast Mark Weader. Both do great work also Dave Keck does great work but stays pretty busy running Knobb Mountain supply. Those are the ones I am familiar with.

I have ordered blanks and barrels from John Getz and had them shipped to Mark Weader. The results were super. I have also ordered wood from Dunlap and had the wood and a barrel from another vendor shipped to Mark Keck. Also super work. These were swamped barrels, all with non standard profiles.

No problem with using these talented people at all. Tell them what you want done, and they do it to the best of their abilities. Mark Wheland just did a inlet for me. Fantastic work!

If your in the south Brian Turner in Corinth Miss. does a good job. It is a big time saver to have it done. I`d rather save the time and energy for the build. Nathan

I've had Mark Wheland do a couple of blanks for me and I highly recommend him. Great work at reasonable prices!

David Rase comes highly recommended as well. While I've no experience with his inlet work, I do have several of his "gun-builder helpers" (jigs) and highly recommend them.

While it is a time saver, a barrel channel can be cut with only hand tools. The same goes for the ramrod groove. I made a drill for the ramrod hole with 1/4" piano wire and a 3/8" drill bit, brazing the works together. A cheap electric drill works fine, since you can only cut an inch or so at a time before having to clear the chips to prevent binding.

I like to do it myself, I like the challenge.

I've had this done by both David Rase and Mark Weader. I thought both inlets were perfect.

I realize it can certainly be done by hand.

I had a few done by Fred Miller sometime back and also Dave Rase since Fred is no longer with us It would be VERY difficult for him to help you. Dave's work was very good - no issues. Both men did require that you send the barrel with the stock so that the stock can be routed exactly to the barrel profile.

I don't know exactly what you are looking for but Greg Dixon has a few semi-planked stocks in the rack that have the barrel channels in and the ramrod hole drilled. Maybe a call to him would help?

I would highly recommend Mark Wheland. He's not that far from the Pittsburgh area, does,great work, and is a pleasure to,do business with. After having Mark do one blank for me, I've done my last swamped,barrel by hand. And Mark writes on the stock so you know the web thickness, ramrod size etc. He is really knowledgeable, spend some time at his shop, you will be surprised how much you learn!

I had quite a chat with Mr. Fred Miller on February 5th in Lewisburg Pa,
He seemed very healthy to me. He had some small (children's size) barrels
inlet into some pre carved stocks for sale as well as his war clubs.

I use Mark Wheland to do my barrel groves and ramrod groves for swamped barrels. He does a good job. I used Fred Miller until he retired. I don't think Fred Miller has passed. I think I saw photo's of his clubs at a show a while back. I purchased my wood from Freddy Harrison all these years until he passed a few years back. You may have gotten the two Fred's mixed up. If Fred Miller has passed, please let me know. He always helped me out of binds in the past 30 years, and I miss his work.

I think folks have Fred Miller mixed up with Freddy Harrison. Freddy Harrison died a couple of years ago but as far as I know Fred Miller is alive and kicking! Fred Miller sold his stock business to Dave Keck, Knob Mountain Muzzleloading. Go to the Knob Mountain website and you will see Fred Miller's pattern's. If you want Dave to dupe any of them just give him a call.

Now if you want Indian War clubs, Fred Miller can fix you up with all you want. He is turning them out now instead of gun stocks. He has some neat ones.

Mark Wheland isn't terribly far. And actually works out. I can possibly arrange it to pick up my blank(s) from Tiger Hunt and shoot over to Marks from there.

I don't have anything in mind yet. Just getting ducks in a row so to speak. Planning.

I had no idea if starting with such a blank was a good or a bad idea. Doesn't seem to be a bad idea. And I think it'll save a lot of time and energy I can put into the rest of the rifle.

I may try another precarve yet...I don't know. Now that I know of more suppliers, I may. We'll see. How much I learn between now and when I'm ready to start building the next one..Which likely won't be for about a year... Unless I find a house soon and start this summer. Fall is a no build time for me. I'm anxiously waiting to get my hands on another build..But at the same time I wanna learn more and plan this one out better. And, I'm definitely not starting one till I find a house and am living in it.

I just saw Fred Miller at Lewisburg selling his war clubs. Mark Weader has had some family issues lately so if your waiting for something, be patient, his work is top quality and he's just a nice guy to do business with.
