Here is a .58 halfstock flint plains rifle I built.  If this interests you, I can give you details, which are on this site.

About 24 yrs ago I wanted a half stock flint rifle gun and this is what I thought a late period  flint gun might look like. At that time Muzzle Blast was the only referance I had for  flint guns.It is my fanticy
piece. May not be histoicaly correct but I like it.  Bob

Hello all, and thank you the information that you offered, however my interest is towards a Lancaster-ish type half stock. :o .Perhaps even an Armstrong variant. ???
I really thought that your telepathy was in tune with me. :-[
Weird isn't it.

Originals built in America are quite rare. I'm not sure I have ever seen a Lancaster example but I'm sure somebody will prove me wrong. Also, I'd not bet the farm on the information or gun styles on certain websites.

hello
let us not forget to have a look at the m1803/1819 Harpers Ferry rifle, which may or may not be the first American 1/2 stock rifle of note.

New England militia rifles - private rifles not muskets - often were half-stocked with a wooden under rib.

Might want to look in the Old Testament (a.k.a. Dillin) Plate 7, Laidacker Collection, rifles 1 & 2

No. 1, C.T. Stahl 60 balls to the pound. Sellers lists him as Lancaster, PA, 1810 - 1817, flintlock Kentucky.

No. 2, I.G. Wren, 120 balls to the pound. Sellers says I.G. Wren, unlocated, flintlock Kentucky.

This question has come up before, fairly recently. Think I recall could be one in
The Longrifles of Western Pennsylvania: Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties,, R. Rosenberger & C. Kaufmann ©1993 Not sure though.

Since early '51 I have been in love with that C.T. Stahl.

This is a example of a English Rifle made for presentation to the Indian chiefs in Canada during the war of 1812. About 200 of these were made and some others that were over under with a rifle on top and a 20 Ga. on the bottom. These originally came in 55 caliber. I made this gun about 7 or 8 years ago. It now belongs to a member of this forum.

There are two fairly early half- stock flint rifles in this picture.
The top right is a 6 bore - .920 calibre.  The second one down is much smaller, perhaps only a 28 bore or so.

here is an original 13 bore

And My little gun for ball and shot.

Here is Dphar's 16 bore rifle.

This is an HWhall 11 bore ball and shot gun, meant for both due to it's weight, size of breech and length of tube - 36". The same gun could easily have been built in flint.

This one stands out like a goose egg in a bucket of coal. This kind of craftsmanship should
be an inspiration to others to try and do a better job. The lock is beautiful and I would like to
know where the external parts came from. Thank you muchly for posting this picture.

Thanks guys. I think Keith Lisle owns this gun now.  Bob that lock is a Pedersoli Mortimer plate and frizzen with a French style hammer I think I bought from Blackley. I had to stretch the hammer about 1/8". The throw was too short. The internals were remodeled. I made a new main spring for it because the Pedersoli spring was too mushy. I annealed the plate and engraved it then case hardened it again.
I shot two deer with that gun. I got one through the heart at 135 yards. It has a two bladed rear sight.  One blade is for 150 yards. The other for 100. It has an inset breach.

Hi,
I must say that the rifle shown by Mr. Huddleson is awesome.
Thank you for taking the time to show it to us, but it does set the bar a little high for us newbie gun makers :-[
It is difficult to find enough praise to describe the workmanship on that lock.
Thank you again.

Beautiful rifle! My good friend has a Pedrosoli Mortimer and shoots it a lot. Without doubt the best performing production rifle flint-lock I have experience with. I have a flint halfstock rifle copied from the one front and center in the Remingtom Museum in Ilion NY and in the Remington history book. It was supposedly the first semi-production rifle Remington manufactured.
