Another Chambers Conversion
« on: March 04, 2017, 02:58:49 AM »
This is a lock I am working on. It will go on a Russian Tula flintlock rifle. It will be engraved wit ha scene and gold work. The conversion is not finished. There is another Frizzen for it that has been chiseled.

That is cool. Russian, huh? Don't see many of those reproduced...Post pics of the finished gun.

Did you add metal to the pan bridle to allow for that rounded shape, as Smart Dog did on his conversion?

Jerry:  I see that all your internal screws are blind.  Did you use the "Gunmaker's Plate" or make your own?

Nice, Jerry.  I was wondering about the blind screws as well...  Can't wait to see the finished piece!

That looks really cool!  I would straighten out the upper cock extension, the thumb tab or whatever the heck people call it.  The shaping of the Siler is like a neon sign that screams 'Siler' and most originals of any era have a much straighter extension, even those with some back bent curvature do not seem to display the abrupt bend there that the Siler does.  It's pretty easy to do with some heat and then some filing, no need to add material at all.

I kind of assume you're going to do something with that frizzen spring too.

How about posting some progress shots here as you go along?  I have no idea how you do half the stuff you do and it would be great to see things progress or in-process.

Taylor.   I had to use the gun makers lock. I couldn't get the shape out of a regular lock. There is a lot more work to do on the lock but I couldn't see doing it until I started Engraving it.  Here is a photo of the original Russian lock that gave me the idea. I do not like the engraving on it or the gold work. I will do my own art designs also a photo of the trigger guard that I fabricated. This photo was taken during fabrication but it is now completed. I am doing this gun for a client. He will do most of the stock work. It will be at least two years before it is done because I have a pistol to finish first. The pistol is also Russian double flint. It has a trigger guard like the one in the photo. There will be gold framed banknote game scenes on both guns.

Wonderful Jerry!!  You may be one of the few alive who can do that kind of work including the historical knowledge.

I never meant to ignore your post. You are right about the hammer. You can see in the photo more what it will look like.  I;m no historical Expert. I just have a lot of books.
