4-40 screw source needed
« on: March 05, 2017, 12:02:34 AM »
Can anyone point me towards a source of two-inch, 4-40, oval head, straight slot, un-plated, carbon steel screws?

I need some for the swivel breech build

I don't think you are going to find what you are looking for. You may have to "improvise". Look at Hobbie aircraft or RC cars for screws or threaded rod. If it were me I'd thread and braze a round rod slug on one end and then turn it to the head shape you want. The diameter size, length, head shape, & material you are looking for might be impossable to find -- good luck in your quest.

Mike, How about these from Brownells....

It looks like you could just buy the refill for #4 screws

Looks like Brownell's blanks are the way to go. I can turn the heads to the shape I need.

Thanks.

Those don't look like they're long enough.

The shanks of the blanks from Brownells are a little over 2" long.   I have both the finished screw and screw blank sets; and they come in quite handy.

Check your local hobby shop that caters to RC cars and planes. They carry a wide selection of small machine screws.

I have a couple, maybe three boxes of them, but not in 2 inches long. Got them from an old hardware store that was closing down about 25 years ago. You may find some at flea markets or such.

Do they have to be iron screws?Because I just brought me some 4-40 screws at ace hardware that are brass.I use them for attaching my nose caps.

All you have to do is put these in some hydrochloric or muriatic  acid for about 1 minute and the zinc will be gone.
