does a round bottom groove take a thicker patch and ball than a flat bottom groove working with a rice 50 cal
round bottom groove trying to decide on patch/ball combo

In general...yes. The barrel makers list the depth of the grooves , so you can use that info to figure out what you need.

Bob is correct; Rice round groove barrels are .016" while most square grooves are about .010". This is what I've been advised, at least.

I always let the rifle decide the thickness or patch and diameter of ball. Take an assortment of what you are considering and spend a few hours at a benchrest. That's the only way to know for sure.
