This day just went south fast.

The forestock panel on the swivel breech rifle caught a fold in my sleeve, and just snapped in half.

The wood is so thin at the entry thimble, it broke in an instant when I moved my arm.

I am in total heroic rescue mode now. I'm trying to bond it with a layer of fiberglass re-enforced epoxy under the panel, and straight epoxy applied directly to the break.

If this doesn't work I'll have to make a new side panel from scratch...fingers crossed...

I imagine that caused some nasty language and frustration. Good luck on the repair.

I feel your pain. A few years ago I had a rifle completely finished and the stock was a very hard and brittle piece of wood. For some reason I had the barrel out doing something and the stock was laying on my bench. I bumped the stock and it started to fall to the floor, I reached out and caught it by the muzzle end of the stock. It broke clean in two just behind the middle thimble. I went into panic mode for sure. I did pretty much what you are doing for the repair and when finished you could not see the break from the outside of the stock. I hope your repair goes as well.

Hi Mike,
I think you should be OK. The panel supports no weight and is attached to the barrel assembly at multiple points, on both sides of the break including the screws going through the forward lock plates under the pan. I think it will all work out. The glass in the photo is about the size of the scotch I would pour to deal with this one. I would even use up some of my Laphroig.

Sorry to hear about that.

Bulky clothing is not good for working around thin wooden parts, thus I always work in the nude.

No- we don't want to see THAT video.

I have been giving this some thought over a cup of coffee, now that I have a little more distance from the event.

If this doesn't work, and, maybe, even if it does, I'm thinking I will file and polish the entry thimble and epoxy it into place.

That will give support and rigidity to the area of the break...kind of like a big pin...any thoughts?

I`ve been a member of the broken stock club too. Usually the best thing to do is what you`ve done . Step back, regain your breath , change under garments , get a drink and formulate a repair plan. You`ll get it back together just stay calm . Best of luck!! Nathan

Gluing the entry pipe with expoxy would help, but I'm wondering if you could add a layer of epoxy with fine wire on the back side to add a bit more strength. Assuming you're using Acra Glass, remember to dye it as it'll never take stain.

Mike,

If you would like I will send you two new panels for your rifle. Both barrel panels are cut
from the same piece of wood so that the grain will match on both sides, so if you change one
you should also change the other. Not that many people will notice, but I think it is important. If you bring it here to my shop I will fit them and cut in the frizzen plates for you.

Don't get discouraged, it's only two small pieces of wood. You are not the first one to make
a mistake while building a rifle............of course I never have!!!

That is very generous of you, but I think I'm OK. The fiberglass epoxy fix is holding very well, and it is all but invisible.

If it doesn't work out as I progress I'll let you know, but for now, I think I'm in good shape going forward.
