Kibler Rifle Kit in Ash
« on: April 12, 2017, 02:43:00 AM »
Had to get one of these fantastic kits Jim has produced. Can't say enough good things about it, nearly a finished rifle when it arrived. Can't believe how thin the fore stock is, makes the handful of guns I have previously built from blanks feel like 2X6's.

It's a .45, with the stock purchased from Dunlap. Added a side plate, toe plate, couple copper rivets in the trigger guard, and a Gillespie grease hole. Sprayed the stock with black spray paint sanded back which left the open grain dark. Ended up using Laurel MTN stain; Honey maple then Lancaster maple overtop. Kiblers bone black and Jim Chambers finish.

Super duper. I really like the sideplate and grease hole.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Takes real courage to cut a grease hole like that in ash!  Did you have some scrap to practice with?  With the alternating hard and "soft" rings, it's hard to keep that hole from wandering.  What type of bit did you use?  Looks really nice!

Lovely.

Mine was ordered in Maple....

Going to call and see if I can change that order to Ash.  Hopefully there is still time to make that change.

That is spectacular, and I'd have never guessed Ash could come out like that and have so much curl.  Jim did a super job of laying out the grain.

I have to say, either you are very experienced or very brave.  The black paint in the soft grain is a trick I learned from "American Restorations" on TV.  On the other hand, I just use it on cartridge boxes to make them look old.  Your rifle is a whole 'nuther thing.  Did you know it would turn out that beautiful, or were you hoping?  Really fantastic finish, and delightful on that piece of wood.  Hard to think of anything better.

I think your metal finish compliments it all very well.

The grease hole?  Juuuust right.

Please send that one to me for sighting in.  You MIGHT see it again some day.  Just saying......  ;-)

Best wishes, and God Bless,   Marc

That is gorgeous!
I think you have hit the balance of adding just the right amount of flair without over-doing it.
Nicely done. I love the wood finish.
What did you do around the muzzle?  Is that a bevel from the flats to the crown?

Cheers,
Norm.

A pic after black paint sanded back and applying honey maple stain. Also in the picture is a small spoon that I used as a template for the Gillespie grease hole- did not use a bit to cut out, just a couple different gouges. And yes needed to keep very sharp as the wood produces a lot of "slipping" while cutting through alternating grain.
I tried a number of different finish techniques on a piece of scrap that Jim sent with the kit.
The muzzle is chamfered hard but is still flat on the end.

Thanks for the kind words,
Jeff

Great job.  I think this is my favorite assembled kit I've seen, including the ones I've put together myself!
