I was about to purchase my first jeweler's saw from TOW.  I have not used a jeweler's saw much so can someone recommend some blade sizes to start with?  Perhaps a few that are most used.  I'm about to start work on the patch box.  I did the toe plate with a hacksaw and files and a jeweler's saw would have helped.  Another question, how is the thickness and width measured.?  Do you use flat or piercing blades?  I plan to buy the guide book they offer which will probably answer my questions but I'd like to order some blades now.  Thanks, as usual, for the information.  Gary.

Blades are matched to the thickness of your material such that approx 3-4 teeth per thickness. Piercing blades are for cutting curves and the like. Use these for your PB. (I do not often use the flat blades although these are like mini hacksaw blades if you will.) Use a good wax, beeswax or a stick lube like is used on flat grinder disks on the blade.
Cut on the pull, not the push. I enjoy using my jewelers saw. Got it from Brownells some years ago. Try search for the good blade deals. There are good blades and excellent blades and down right crappy blades.
The blades are fairly cheap so you may want to get a small pack of each. I do find uses beyond FL fun for them. (Can I say that here  :o)

Some blades are offered with a rounded back edge, just for doing curves better.

If you are cutting .04 thick metal, you should have three to four teeth engaged in the material at any one time. This prevents grabbing of the blade and then breakage.

A little soap or wax on the blade helps tremendously.
