To each their own. I must say the bottom picture of the gun above is my opinion some outstanding work, I find it very appealing, quite  similar to some of Jud Brennan's work I saw in hand  a decade or two ago... I believe it brought 50K or so as well. I'll admit I'm just a bit too conservative/traditional for anything outside of 18th/19th century work....just me.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Your not too conservative Mike.  We need guys like you. I love the trad stuff very much. It's just that nobody ever sold one for enough money.  I wish I had a NW trade gun. That's what I want now.  I'm going to trade some stuff for trade gun parts.

Jerrywh I very much admire your work. When people say it's to much they should look at Napoleon's gun. Who ever did that weapon back then. Had the same philosophy as you. Perfection was his game an you both are Master's of it. I am humbled to see such exquisite workmanship. Thanks for showing. Oldtravler

Thanks for sharing Jerry.  I'm now working with a Master Engraver and will be at the Engrave-In.  New doors are opening.

Jerry,

Thanks for the encouragement.  I have printed out your post and it is now mounted to the wall in my little gunsmithy.

In the end, you and I may be making close to the same dollars per hour. I can't imagine the number of hours you have in some of the work you do.

True Mike but I don't work as hard as you do. I been there and done that. Besides it's a lot less strain dealing with people who have a lot of money.  Some of them like to brag about how much they paid for their gun.
Wade Patton.  The co founder of the GRS engraving company bought one of my guns.  The R in GRS stands for Rhoner. John Rhoner.  I also knew Don Glaser. Great guys.  Who will you be taking lessons from?

While I tend to be abit more traditional,I do find rifles that are engraved as well as carved appealing. More art than firearm, not sure. For some dumb reason I find that face on that lock hammer pretty cool. While I would not be able to make nor afford such pieces I still thinks there's room at the table for them.Heck in my twisted universe I still think about a blunderbuss who's stock is actually carved as an arm with hand holding a barrel that's pretty much a dragon/snake towards the flaired muzzle.Luckly I come back back from there fairly quickly ;)

I'm now part-time employed by Scott Pilkington -hosting the 12th annual Engrave-In this year.  Leaving surveying altogether.  I have things to make.
