TOTW Jaeger folding leaf sight
« on: May 06, 2017, 08:44:53 PM »
I bought this sight and got it put on my rifle. I haven't added the leaf yet cause I wanted to see if any of you made it so that the leaf snapped into position? If so how did you do it? I tried searching and wasn't able to find exactly what I was looking for. I did read Taylor's post on his folding sight he made and he mentioned a leaf spring of sorts. I am pretty visual though so I was having troubles picturing how to make it work exactly. Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

I used one on a rifle. Didn't do anything fancy with it. I just fold it up when needed. Never had any problem with it falling down.

"The Modern Gunsmith, Two Volumes in One -Volume II, Chapter XX, p. 274" (illustration) by James V. Howe ISBN: 0-517-38583X

..it's a neat project.

I installed a great folding leaf sight on my own Jaeger back in the last century, but I got rid of the folding leaf - too slow to use in hunting situations.  I learned how to hold with just the non-adjustable leaf for ranges to 200 yards. (.60 cal, 86 gr. FFg. .022" denim patch with mink oil)  This rifle has won several long range round ball matches out to 275 yds. and taken many heads of game including deer, bear, and moose.  You don't need the folding leaf, perhaps.

A member posted a picture a long time ago of one of those sights it showed a picture of the bottom of the sight. It had a small spring dovetailed into the bottom of the sight that acted on a finger on the folding sight just the way the finger on a lock frizzen acts on the frizzen spring.BJH

I am going to get it sighted in for the fixed blade first and then once I get my hunting load dialed I will mess with the leaf. I wanted to have the second leaf for target practice at further ranges. Not period correct probably but I put it on my GPR and cut the little decorative part off and rounded the end. Thought it was a neat site and wanted to experiment with it. I will have see if I can find that book to look at it. I can always just use friction and mess with a spring later if I decide I need it.

It looks very tall to me.  I'd see how the gun mounts and your sight picture before going to a sight that tall.  Might need a stock with little drop.

I put folding leaf sights on my last four or five rifles. None of them have a detent spring. The folding leaf just fits kind of snug. Some folding leaf sights have a detent spring. It is under the bottom and is not visible  from the top or the sides. It is a tiny flat spring that fits in a groove underneath. The folding leaf has a small tit on the bottom that goes past center on the spring. I had a photo of one and was going to make one but decided it was unnecessary.

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense. I will see what I can do for it. Rich I plan on doing an express sight style so most of that sight will be filed down. That was how it came  from TOTW and I haven't had the time to shape it yet.

I put a folding leaf sight on a jaeger I made. I developed an unconscious habit of flicking the leaf up and down and it cost me the biggest whitetail deer I ever had a chance at. An easy fifty yard shot, standing broadside, shot right over him, leaf was up. Ah well.

Oh no! I could totally see myself doing that. Will have to impose a rule not to touch unless necessary.

This one has detent springs so the leaves withstand recoil when deployed.
