Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
« on: May 08, 2017, 02:03:34 AM »
I am getting ready to apply store bought Aqua Fortis to the stock of the Kibler kit gun I am doing. Never done this before. The directions on the bottle say to neutralize the Aqua Fortis with Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) solution, but it does not give any indication of how many parts of the Baking Soda I should dissolve in how much water. Is it that obvious relative to how much Sodium Bicarb should be used per quart of water that they don't feel a need to let a green horn like me know? I would really appreciate a vector to the proper mixing of Baking Soda to water to get an effective neutralizing agent.

I prefer to used ammonia since you can use it without mixing.  I was always concerned about having to scrape baking soda off my stock when I was done.

I dissolved as much soda as the water would take and let the rest settle to the bottom of the cup.  Poured off the liquid and used it to wash the stock.  Have had no problem getting it neutralized.

I have turned a stock green by applying baking soda in solution  and was quite surprised .
That was a major redux to fix that .

Mentioning that to a friend ,he suggested Soda water which works as well and mixes well with Scotch if you like that kind of thing.

Thanks for the input.  You do realize, of course, that Scotch should never (NE-VER) be mixed with anything? I mean, we are not an uncivilized herd of Troglodites... Gad zooks!!  ;)

Well, then I stand corrected and rightfully so.
