Question on a type G trigger guard are these Inletted on or do they set on the stock? Are they also nailed on as the Butt plate? Thanks in advance. Paul Bigham

Mine was laid on the surface and tapped to conform to the stock. The front extension was held by the tang bolt that is threaded into the tang of the barrel from below and the rear extension had a screw as well.

The type G guard should be bent so it is crowned or radioused in crossection when viewed from the front or rear. The guard on the Williamsburg owned gun was attached by the tang bolt upward threaded into the barrel tang, with screws in the rear extension. Originally I bet it had nails as the guard was repaired long ago at the bow. I have seen a original trade gun with a nailed on guard extension. Due to the use of screws on the Williamsburg gun I suppose you could do it either way. The guard should be surface mounted. Tip, bend the end of the extension and the finial down slightly before final installation of the guard, this will prevent the ends tipping up away from the stock after installation. BJH

Yep, surface sheet brass.  Normally, tang bolt enters through the guard, with the tang threaded to accept the bolt.

Front extension inlet. Rear is top mounted but made to fit the wrist radius.

Not on type G's.  All surface mounted.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Dang. My wrong answers are way more than my right answers. I guess I won't be going on Jeopardy any time soon.
