Painted Powder Horns
« on: May 26, 2017, 01:06:24 AM »
I've heard of the spotted powder horns and folk art painted horns with flowers and  etc... but can anyone tell me if the entire  horn body was ever completely painted  by their owner? Just wondering if any of you fellas have ever seen one?
Also, is their a special technique and paint to decorate a horn?
Thanks for the info Guys !

Here's a couple that I photographed at an Artisan show a couple of years ago. I've been thinking about doing a painted horn for some time but haven't found a horn ugly enough that I want to cover with paint :-\

During America's Centennial in 1876 lots of these old horns, tomahawks were brought out & painted & were in parades.  I got this information from several collectors whose family members did this. I had a great pipe axe that had traces of gold left on it. Also people painted lots of frontier items besides weapons & accessories to spice up their lives.
