Need help to ID initials on rifle barrel
« on: June 02, 2017, 08:24:51 PM »
I recently acquired a full stock plains type rifle that looks to be textbook Leman with a two screw Leman style patchbox, however the original lock with squared rear has been replaced by an unmarked lock that fits well enough but is obviously not original.  The 32 inch long octagonal barrel is one inch across the flats and measures 50 caliber, with worn rifling still visible.  The top barrel flat has two engraved script letters that I am struggling to identify.  I would be much obliged if you would please look at the photos and tell me what you think we have here.  I'm not even sure which way to read the script, so I've include pictures from both sides of the gun.
Thanks for your help.

I'd say the first one is the right way and suggest it is "SP" or "JP."

I'm with you on the JP.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Thank you, I think it might be an S.  I found a Pennsylvania rifle by Jacob Stoudenour with a similar script S. Not that this is a Stoudenour, just was looking for script barrel markings.

I humbly salute the terrible sacrifice of the Dillon family.  Imagine the poor parents.  We must never forget our past.
