I thought it might me fun to post some pictures showing the progress of my shop renovation. So far, I have removed all my stuff to the rec room, torn out the walls and benches, and begun to put in new. I've studded the walls, insulated, vapour barrier, and sheeted them with plywood. the end wall is sheeted with 1/2"ply for shelving, and the wall where my bench and tools will be is sheeted with 3/4" ply. Tomorrow I'll paint the walls, and then begin building new benches.

Living in Minnesota I can appreciate the insulation and builing a heated shop. I need to do what you are doing and put in a good heater for mine. Winter is when I have time to build, but hate heating up the shop. My problem is Murphy's law "clutter expands to the space increased for it".

Taylor Ya gonna put down a wood floor over sleepers and insulation? Easier and warmer on old feet LOL. and here you lead us to believe you where looking for a lost fly

taylor,are you going for something that you can control the temp and humidity...keep same conditions year round....my shop is in the basement and i need to get it climate contolled...everything stays nice in the winter and everything rusts down there in the summer...

I have a similiar problem being in the basement of a 110 year old house. In the summer the dehumidifer goes 24/7 and it still feels damp. I also get the dust floating down from the rafters above and the old hardwood floor on them. Thinking of putting some type of ceiling down there to cut down on the dust.

I just need to clean. I'd probably have twice the useful room if I got rid of some of the junk I don't use anymore.

You keep saying I'm doing this, I did that, and I'm gonna do something else tomorrow. From the pictures, it looks like HE is doing all the work, otherwise you'd be in the picture and HE'd be taking them.

TOF- you're nobody's fool. That's my buddy Melvin, the brains and brawn behind this reno. I help where I can - the hand is healing ok, but stiff and sore most of the time. So it's a good time for this long needed fix. This is a basement shop that until now had concrete walls and floor. The floor gets a 1/2" thick rubber matt all along the 16" bench front.
We don't have moisture problems here in the Great White North. The humidity is sometimes high in the summer when it's hot, but it doesn't last long. There's sure no problem with too much in the house. In the winter especially, it's quite the opposite.

Today, the walls got their first coat of paint...second one goes on tonight before bed. Tomorrow the wiring goes in and we begin the bench.

Taylor, If you have not had rubber mats before you will love them. I put them in my shop about 8 years ago and wondered how I ever got along with out them. What a relief on the knees. Oh yeah, losing 53 lbs last year did not hurt either.

Dave, I'm reinstalling the mats I had down before the reno. I've been using them for at least ten years, and I agree it makes an enormous difference in one's health. And they are soft enough that when I drop a chisel or carving knife, it sticks into the rubber and does no damage to the edge....well nothing compared to concrete.

Regarding the rubber mats, were they something you and Dave found at Lowes or Home Depot or the interlocking kind for a kids playroom floor?

Mine are three foot square with buttons along one edge and corresponding cups to receive them, along the next one. They were a gift from a benevolent patron but he purchased them locally.

I first built that shop in 1978, and over the years, more than just a tumbler fly has disappeared in the dust. Yet, when I swept up the floor after ripping out the bench, I found nothing interesting. I was a little disappointed and surprised.

Rubber mats are GREAT. I have back problems and working in the shop just made it worse. I put down the rubber matt that Lowes sells off a roll and ware those LL Bean boots with a thick rubber sole. The combination sounds funny but they really help.

I bought mine from Woodcraft. They periodically have them on sale and I bought them a couple at a time.

Tractor Supply sells Horse stall mats that are great for shop mats, a little pricey but will last two lifetimes, and worth it. They are designed to take the stress from concrete stalls.

The bench top is 37" from the floor.

We made a good start at getting the bench in today. I'll cap the legs, build a double set of drawers and some boxes on casters tomorrow. I now have a 16' x 2' bench top.
