Kibler SMR kit build with added patch box
« on: June 12, 2017, 06:47:13 PM »
So not to horn in on the other thread I thought I would post a few pictures from my last kit building class in March of this year. I am posting picture's of Ron Hess's project. Ron had a great time with this kit and because it went together so well we had a few extra days in the class to work on making and installing a patch box. Here are a few picture's of Ron's rifle.

I would like to say that I was very impressed with this kit and that it can be made into an individual rifle by adding a patch box inlays and nose cap or what ever your heart desires. Jim has provided a great canvas to start with.

Nice rifle -- it's coming along very well. In the last picture there is a box on the right side of the picture on top of some other stuff - is this box what the rifle was shipped in and is it made of wood?

P.W. that is the box that Jim ships his kits in, first class box for first class parts. 8)

Kingsburyarms, glad you looked at this post so you would have an idea of how a box would look on this little rifle. I went back and looked in Jerry's books and he shows the original rifle in vol. 1 on page 124. The box that Ron and I made is very close to the original box but we used two screws instead of 3 screws.

Again good luck with your build and I hope it turns out well for you.

That is going to be a fine looking rifle when finished.

Is it just the camera angles or is that one slim rifle? To me it looks beautiful.

Jim,
Going to start my Kibler rifle soon and want to do a matchbox like your design on it. Is there any way you can share the dimensions and possibly a photo of the outline that we novices can us to try and make one ourselves? Also, what was the thickness of the steel that you all used? i believe I have some from one of the big box stores that is 22 gauge and some that is 16 gauge. Seems also to be discussion if to be HC, these boxes had 2 or 3 screws. I do not have the book you are referring to but I assume you are referencing points from that book. Thanks and look forward to your posts.

Elkhorne the box is 5 1/4" in total length x 1 1/4" wide with the Door measuring 3 3/4" long. Jerry Nobel's volume 1 is the book that I referenced.  These are available from Jerry for $40 plus postage. I did a YouTube video on making a Charley Been patch box. If you watch that it will give you all the information about making an iron banana style patch box.

Bama,
Thanks very much for the info. I like your patchbox as it is not nearly so "cigar" shaped as many seem to be. I will also check out the YouTubes and watch your build on them. Thanks again.

Ron looks pretty happy there.   :-)

I have heard rumors that this rifle now has finish and is in use.....

God Bless,   Marc
