Brass wrist repair help
« on: June 14, 2017, 12:07:38 AM »
Ok, wrist is NOT broken, but had to reshape butt stock, and don't want to refinish whole gun.......so, thought I'd do a wrap around wrist repair at the transition.
Need a little help with thickness of metal, methods of attaching, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Dane

Smallpatch I recently did a repair on a Brown Bess that had a wrist rap repair. The wrap was made from copper sheet that was about a 1/32" in thickness and was nailed to the wrist with copper nails. This was the first time I had seen copper used for this. I have seen brass and iron sheet with iron nails which are probably more common. The copper had tarnished over time and looked like black iron. So use any of these metals and you will be good.

Dane,
First, tell me it isn't the little ash stock.
Here is the link, I am sure you have seen it, to the Pratt/Kibler rifle with sheet brass "repair".  http://contemporarymakers.blogspot.com/2014/09/jim-kibler-rifle-with-repair-by-ian.html
I would use 28g (.015") and definitely nothing thicker than 24g (.024").
If it were me, I would use a piece of my goat rawhide and some linen thread to do the "repair".  You can go to the pet store and buy a rawhide dog chew and do the (repair) with rawhide.  I think rawhide would be easier to craft to the shape of the gun.  Maybe start with a piece of cloth and make a pattern and adjust a bit for shrinkage when the rawhide dries.  You could also add tacks to help keep it in place if you wanted.
Have fun with whatever you do.

Dave,
No, it's a Lehigh smooth schimmel that needed a little reshaping. Thought if I did the fake repair, I wouldn't have to refinished the entire stock. The repair gives me a cut off.
