progress report, iron/silver Sheetz rifle
« on: June 16, 2017, 03:13:51 AM »
Finally getting a chance to settle into working on the Sheetz fantasy rifle I am building.  Got the T/G made, patchbox installed, hidden hinge release working and the buttstock carving drawn on.  I never carve a gun on the same day that I draw the design, so I thought I would post a photo of my design today for comment and tomorrow I will start the grounding process.

That is going to look fantastic David. Did you hammer out that butt plate and trigger guard?

This looks to be a special rifle with some unique features. Sheetz was a very artistic riflesmith and yours looks like it will very artistic also. I too look forward to the finished gun.

Jim,
I did make both the buttplate and the triggerguard.  They are both 2 piece riveted and silver brazed together.

C.C. Fiddler,
The cleaning accessories were also hand made by myself.  Funny story, I let my client know that I had completed the patchbox so he came by on Tuesday night to take a look.  I placed the tools in the cavity as a little surprise for him.  Beings he is not well versed in traditional muzzleloading, when he opened the box he ask me what the items inside were for.  Completely burst my bubble.  I politely responded that they were the cleaning tools and ball puller for his rifle.

Jim,
I forgot to mention that the gentleman whom I am building this rifle for is a rather large client.  He is very lanky so we agreed tomake the pull on this rifle 14 7/8" long which presented a challenge of balancing out the architecture, hence hand crafting both the T/G and B/P slightly larger than normal to compensate for the overall dimensions.

Dave, that's a great looking rifle. How many times did it take to make the trigger the size you wanted? Usually takes two for me if its a new style I haven't done before.

Everything Dave does is top of the line. When it comes to making guns he's underpaid. At times people ask me who is the best muzzle loading gun maker in the country today.  There are a few dozen like Dave who are essentially equal. One thing for sure there are more good ones now than ever before.
Nobody is always correct, Not even me.
