19th Century Folding Knives?
«

Does anyone make traditional 19th century pattern folding knives? Looking for one to put in my shooting bag as a patch knife. I don't want stainless steel as its obviously not PC.
Anyone make these anymore, if so, whom?

Yep, I do. Go to the contemporary makers blog and look up Brian Barker for some that I have made.

I'd love to see them, waksupi!
Mr. Barker, nice knives!
Just looking for a simple carbon steel period folding knife to tuck in my bag for patch cutting. Seems all the barlows made are stainless steel now.

Brian makes some great looking period correct accouterments. You cannot go wrong with his stuff and you will not be disappointed.

You might want to look at the Opinell line of knives. Big to little, carbon and stainless, durable, locking blades and very sharp. Wood scales and can be made to look as old as you want. Bunches on flea bay.

Dave, stop your making me blush. Thanks for the compliment though.
Have you ever made any folders? I know you have the skills.

I looked on the Smokey Mountain knife website and couldn't really find any carbon barlows... they all seem to be stainless steel.

I make some.
I'll be doing some more in a couple weeks. I can't access Photobucket for some reason. I'll try again Sunday, off to a shoot today. If I can't attach them at that time, message me your email, I can send pictures.

Try this:
https://www.smkw.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?blade_material=1095+Carbon+Steel&q=Barlows
You just enter "barlows" in their search box and when the page comes up look at the left side. You can choose blade length, handle material and other things and blade material. Click on 1095 carbon steel and they search for that.

I have an old Case knife from the 70's that you can have for a good price if that is what you want. Most new barlows as with this case have nickel bolsters and brass liners rather than iron or steel like the 19th century ones. Just depends how authentic you want.

Here are some of the early style knives I make. Carbon steel blades. I use steel, bone, horn, ebony, maple, or walnut for handles. Third from the top is still for sale. It is a second, as it has a blemish, a filled worm hole behind the bolster.
