Halfstock Flint Plains Rifle
« on: June 29, 2017, 06:04:55 AM »
Just finished this one, the first rifle I've ever built for someone else.  He wanted a halfstock Plains rifle, .50 flintlock.  The tacks were a must have for him as was the 1823 Liberty silver dollar.  Tried to talk him into letting me inlet it into the cheek piece but he wanted it where you see it.  The nose cap is poured from solder.  The stock is stained with AF overlain with an application of LMF stain.  He wanted light antiquing so the stock is rubbed back in wear areas and darkened with small amount of bone black mixed with the stock finish in recessed areas.  The metal is treated with a combination of various cold blues, brass darkening solution and browning solution, also selectively rubbed back and darkened.  I decided the rifle needed a buffalo powder horn to go with it.

Good looking rifle. I like the finish you've got there on the stock and metal.        Bob

I like it and I like it a lot.

Thanks for all of the kind words.  The barrel is 1" x 36" although it seems longer in the photos.  I had trouble finding a .50 cal 1 x 36 so I wound up cutting down and re-crowning a 42".  The rifle weighs 10 1/4 lbs.  No, Daryl, it wasn't Hatchet Jack.  A close friend of mine asked me to build it for her fella.  He doesn't know much about traditional muzzleloaders but was really taken with them when he saw some of mine so she asked me to build him one.  He loves the rifle.  I'm hoping to recruit him into our ranks!  He's even taking blacksmithing classes.

Very cool. I like that it is something a little different, including the placement of the silver.

TKS - be a nice rifle to shoot in competition, with a 36" X 1"x.50.
