SingleMalt..., I forgot to address your question about smoothing the background... Basically, it was scrapped. I've found that by using a sharp, and as wide a flat chisel as you can when removing background wood, cleanup is much easier. I use a simple scraper made from a square xacto blade first to get out the roughest spots, then a flat chisel for final scraping. I form a burr on the xacto blade, but not on the flat chisels.
Dave..., thanks, and I agree with you about that large, open area. The person I'm building the piece for wanted that area engraved, and that's what I came up with. I'm surprised that more original side plates weren't done that way, as you mentioned, they were rarely engraved in such a manner.
