Since Mike Brooks ask in another post what I was building I thought I would take a few minutes to update you on where I am with my Sheetz rifle project. I spent last week making and inletting silver inlays and silver wire from buttplate to the entry pipe area. This week I am making the last 6 escutcheon inlays and will get them inlet and then I have about 54" of silver wire scroll work to inlet into the upper forestock in lieu of a forestock molding. I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for this project, finish modeling the carving, a bit of engraving and some browning and staining and then it is Miller time.

Dave. If your not a little more subdued you might end up being a high art builder. Be careful you don't cross the line it's highly addictive you know.

How do you get the wood to shrink up around those inlays like that? ;-) Wood made of wool?

I am interested in how the draws fit up high on the escutcheons, adding to the artistic shape. I've never seen that before, and it's neat. Was that from an old gun or your idea? I like it either way.

That is looking fantastic! I can not wait to see it stained and finished. The contrast with the silver is going to be really striking. Good luck on your highway of wire down the forend - that is going to look neat.

Inspiring work for us Minions, Mr. Rase! I have a question or two about design, please. First, and already noted, the slides are above centre in the lower forestock...comment pls. I'm sure the engraving design will take care of the anomaly, if that is what it is. And the wood on the off-side rising above the flat on the side of the barrel at the breech....Sheetz feature?

All,
The rifle I am using as my inspiration for this project is attributed to John or Henry Sheets according to Whisker. As for the orientation of the escutcheons, the 2 inlet into the lower forestock are oriented below the barrel keys which allows room for the wire scroll work between the top of the barrel key head and the centerline of the forestock. The 6 escutcheons inlet into the upper forestock are oriented up allowing the silver wire scrolls to be located between the underside of the barrel key head and the ramrod groove centerline. At least that is the reasoning I came up with after studying the original.
As for the wood rising above the flat on the side of the barrel, I think the camera angle makes it look higher than it really is. The wood is still slightly proud of the barrel. I am not finished with the final shaping of that feature but you can rest assured that I will be following rifle stocking 101 and there will be no wood proud of the metal.
I will keep you all posted on the progress and will definitely post photos of the completed project. Thanks for all the kind words on the workmanship. I have totally enjoyed watching this project come together. My client is over the top with what he has been seeing and is restlessly awaiting delivery, even though I told him I would need to take the rifle to the Montana Historical Gunmakers Guild annual meeting in early August as well as the Washington Historical Gunmakers Guild annual meeting later that same month.
