Bent long sight

A friend of mine brought to me a 45 cal 1863 Springfield ML with a WM Large modified barrel, looks like someone has bent upwards the rear part of the long adjustable rear sight from the rear mounting screw.   I don't know whether it's spring steel or not, if it is, can I just heat to cherry red and slowly bend it back to where it belongs?  +- 3/8"

Maybe it was bent on purpose so it will hit POA.

I thought about that Mike.... this rifle was purchased from the Sherriffs department via an FFL dealer. (Confiscated) drug raid.  Pretty rough shape, I can see where the side of the sight was caught on something and pulled & twisted a little.

I personally do not care for those long, springy sights.  I find they move laterally at the least provocation. 

Drift it out, and put a good fixed blade in the slot.  Yep, the sight radius will get shorter, but with aging eyes like mine it helps with seeing it.
