This is my interpretation of an early iron mounted rifle. It's not meant to be from any particular school, although I did follow the general stock architecture of the Stevensburg, VA, Klette rifle. I had purchased some steel mounts from Dennis Glazener, that were made by Eric Kettenburg, and couldn't wait to do something with them. Obviously, the wide butt piece and trigger guard screamed "early", so I went with a highly Germanic influence, with more baroque themed carving. Maybe a smith recently arrived from one of the Germanic states. So this is the result.... The carving behind the cheek is the one I posted earlier in another thread. The barrel is a Rice, .54 cal., 41", smaller version of the "Dutch Lancaster". The lock is a Chambers round faced Germanic. The stock was stained with iron nitrate, and finished with Permalyn, rubbed back with rotten stone. The mounts were cold blued, then rubbed back. I'll probably have the rifle at the ALR tent at Dixon's if anyone's interested. Be happy to answer any questions if you have them.

Really nice job,your wood,metal finishes look great.Like the carvings as well,some real nice work there.

I know many of you, like myself, who have built several guns, on seeing a new creation, start making a mental parts list of what parts were used. Guns that bring this involuntary reaction to a screeching halt are something special. This is one of those guns. The parts are either cleverly reworked, or shopmade. The stepped wrist, along with the transitional carving, are spot on. You should be very proud of this fine rifle.

The rifle is great Ed. I never would have thought those mounts would have worked with a gun like that but they look great.

That is a great looking rifle. Perfect for hunting. I like the way the stock blends into the barrel at the rear. Great job.

Anyone else notice how understated the figure is in this stock? The architecture and carving carry the whole weight...very nice.
