Got to give 100 yards a try Friday evening after plinking a couple shots at some cans around 45-50 yards out, (hit 3 for 3). I was pleasantly surprised! Had one shot go low and left, not sure if it's in the pic, but I definitely flinched bad lol. Had a couple flashes in the pan still learning how my lock likes to be primed, but when it goes off it sure goes, no delay at all. Used the same load (45 auto case, 30 grains?) I was for 50 yards just changed from 6 o clock hold to dead on. Rested on some rolled up saddle blankets on the trunk of the car. Didn't have as many balls as I thought so had to go home, I'd have to say I'm pleased! Gotta cast more balls!

I did have a snuff tin above the group for size reference but it got cut off (along with my flinched shot) but I assume you guys know the size of duct tape tho lol.

Size of duct tape? Yes. And IMO your 100 yard group is excellent. The best 5 shots groups with three different rifles hovered between 3.75" and just over 4"; that seems to be the best I can do.

Thanks hanshi, I still can't believe that load shoots that flat, I'll have to weigh it to see how much it is exactly, but it ain't much powder. When I shot the group I wasn't even sure I was hitting the target, forgot spotting scope or binoculars. Hope to get more balls cast in my newly made "shack" under a trouble light tonight lol. So far I'm thinking the coyotes won't like this rifle too good.

What calibre is your rifle? Under those conditions, that is indeed a nice group. You can see a square of duct tape at 100 yards? Lucky bugger!!

.40 Cal green mountain barrel, heavy flannel bed sheet for partches cut at the muzzle lubed with neetsfoot oil, 1/48 twist likes light loads? I thought it'd take more powder to get er shootin that far (50 grains+). I was just hopin and pokin, would have been happy to see holes in the target board lol. There was even a bit of a breeze which is why they drifted to the right I think. I'm tickled to say the least after taking 2 years to get this thing firing!

I can still see a square of tape at 100 yards. I've always had above average long range vision, my problem is short range vision. Years ago I did some 100 yard shooting with my .40 caliber Rice. I used from 50 to 60 grains of 3fg and I remember getting some tight groups. I used the same sight picture I used at 50 yards just increased the powder until it got on target. With my .40 a little powder change can show greater results than I anticipated.
Next time I'll use some old saddle blankets, or maybe an old saddle itself and see it it helps my shooting.

I think I'd be pretty happy with that group. I tried shooting at some cans a while back. It wasn't like it used to be with a BB gun, though. The bullet just passed right through. It didn't even move the can. We decided to fill the cans with water- that changed everything. The water filled cans will rip open and fly into the air, water spraying everywhere. Who needs that explosive stuff? Not me. It's much safer and no concern over fire. Try it.

My best group at 100 when my eyes are good, the light just perfect, no breeze and the moon in the right phase etc.,. is about 3" with green mt. .50. My .40 shoots flatter than any rifle I own with very little drop at 100, but the wind gives me fits. 55 grains in my forty gives best groups.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. And good idea filling cans with water! Got some balls cast last night, hopefully get some shooting done this evening. A bit of off hand practice and a varminting I shall go! One of these days I'm gonna try a bit stiffer load and see what that does at 100-200 yards, see just how flat these 40s are. I got no intention shooting game that far, love to plink tho, gotta make a gong to save walking and spotting holes lol.

A 45 Automatic case will NOT hold 30 grains of black powder. A 45 Colt will and then some.

Just a rough guess Bob, gonna weigh this afternoon to see to know for sure all I know is it wasn't much. I did have some Colt cases I planned to use but misplaced them. Figured the lil 45 auto would get me started, had no idea itd hold up out that far.

My .40 cal with 1/48 twist shoots better with about 40 grains 3f than it does with less powder. You might get even better groups with a little more powder.

My first chunk gun barrel (now used mostly at an occasional table match) is GM .40 1:48 1 1/8". It seems to like 60 gr. 3f very much and shoots just as well as my newer .50, but the effect of wind is much more noticeable after 50 yards. I suspect all loads from 30 or under up to at least 70 gr. will shoot well, but I load it on the hot side to minimize wind drift due to flight time.

The "fast" twist will work better at most charge levels until you start damaging or stripping the patch. I don't believe it is possible to over stabilize a round ball in theory as long as it is uniformly spherical to a certain degree, but there does seem to be a sort of minimum spin rate required...just my opinion.

Wind becomes a major drift issue with round balls and unaerodynamic conicals by 100 yards for sure.

Oh, yeah--filling tin can with water makes a good reactive target! Coffee cans are good as well.

If you have spoiled or damaged ripe tomatoes, try that as well. Learned that from an airgunners, and even a pellet makes a satisfactory show.

Of course, don't throw out jackolanterns at least until you've used them for target practice. Pretty fun with shot.

Somehippy, Congrats , on getting her going!! The first rifle I ever built was a .40 cal. Montana barrel 42inch . It liked 50 grains . I killed more groundhogs, and squirrels than I could count and 14 deer with that rifle. Since then I`ve built and shot , about every other caliber made. I`ve never had a rifle that shot any better than that .40 . I still miss that little rifle!!! I still love the .40s. I am anxiously waiting on my Charlie Burton 48 inch .40 . With its GM swamped barrel, my little .40 did best at 100 yards with 60 grains. 30 grains does very well under 50 yds and 40 grains is my standard load and does very well past 50 yards.

You want a fun plinking target drill two 1/2" holes in top of a pumpkin and fill the pumpkin with water until it won't take any more. Better than watermelons and when hit with my .54 it puts on quite a show. Also used it for demo during hunter education training with high velocity rifles - orange mist!

No! I don't shoot offhand at game and when I'm trying to figure out what a rifle will do I bench it. I'm in better shape than a lot of 77 year olds but I know my limitations!

It's a Tom Watson full stock with a really smooth Sharon barrel and L & R Lock. It has amazed me for consistent accuracy.
