At the ALR tent this weekend past, we had crowds of people watching ALR members demonstrate various hand skills. These presentations were for relief carving, graver sharpening, casting small gun parts, forming an entry pipe, how to make your own scrapers, gunstock finishing, stitching leather shooting bags, and so much more.

What sets this venue apart from a YouTube video or a book, is that the presenter will stop and answer questions, will talk about a technique from several perspectives so that the audience truly understands the material, will often speak about different ways to reach the same goal. This is a hands-on, personal kind of one-on one way to transmit the material. From the crowds, I'd say this was a hit.

Below is Ed Wenger, talking to the crowd about relief carving. He's discusses the tools he uses, his techniques, and he carves right there in front of everyone. He pauses while working to talk about what he's doing, the pitfalls, and all the steps from layout to a finished piece.




Long John talks about a variety of topics over the weekend. He goes deep into making and sharpening custom scrapers for stock finishing, from forming the steel, to hardening, sharpening, and finally, using the finished scraper on a stock. This is a brilliant topic, and so useful for the builder.
John does another topic, which he calls "fixing inletting mistakes". This is so useful, form newcomers and experienced builders, because we all make mistakes, and John has several tricks up his sleeve that are genius. In the image below, John shows a visitor the 'fix' he's made to an inletting gap. To fill the gap between a sideplate and its inlet, John carefully hammers out the brass to stretch it until it fills the void. Brilliant.






Smart Dog (Dave Person) demonstrated casting small parts from brass or silver, using Delft Clay. With a few simple tools, Dave shows how to make your own cast parts using a wooden or wax pattern. He also talked about the process of building the mold, the heating and casting of the metal. As the casting cooled, he talked about the various tools and methods he uses to clean up his castings.

In Chuck Dixon's opening remarks one year, I vividly recall him stressing the importance of education and passing on of skills. That's what this Fair is all about; every builder and vendor is teaching and sharing information about the longrifle culture. There is no event quite like the Gunmaker's Fair. A big "Thank You" to Chuck Dixon, to Brenda and Greg Dixon and their family, and their loyal hardworking staff for making this one of the most heavenly weekends of the year.

Tom Currie, just aft the far right tent leg in the grey t-shirt, demonstrates relief carving and backgrounding. Foreground, lft side, Gus is talking about a rifle he built with a couple of other gentlemen. Rear center, in the black t-shirt, Long John is doing some stock work on his double barrel flint smoothie. 





One of my 'customers' is trying out a sharp graver. I made everyone give engraving a try, just so they can get a feel for what a sharp tool can do. Each one was able to make a nice clean line, keep the tool in the brass, and control their depth of cut. Some folks ventured into curves, and did so well with it, they surprised themselves. I also gave out homework, "I want to see an engraved piece of yours next year!"




Back by popular demand was Mitch Yates' "gunstock finishing". Mitch brought his bag of finishes and his years of experience once again to the ALR tent. He talked about wood prep, tannic acid and aqua fortis and reggia, sealing the stock with seed lac, pros and cons of finishes like boiled linseed, spar varnish, Permalyn, Chambers Oil, Tried n True, etc. Mitch even touched on Gary Brumfield's beeswax finish. A very thorough and enjoyable session. (Mitch is the tall guy in maroon, right center)

Dwshotwell, there is talk of a camera and wide screen TV (like a rock concert) for enlarging what is going on at the bench for all to see. It would be especially useful for those who can't attend, or for those who were there but don't remember a durn thing.  ::)

A couple of hurdles with this technology is money to buy it, and who can run it. But I can see this happening one day. It would be most useful for someone demo-ing scrimshaw, needlepoint, or engraving.

Dave and his big bother Nils, heating the brass in the crucible with two torches for pouring a thumbpiece. The sand mold is just to the left of the crucible, in a two-part aluminum ring. Dave all the while describes borax for a flux, coating the crucible with borax, heating the brass beyond melt point to ensure it's liquid enough to pour, not too much heat so the zinc doesn't burn off, etc. Very very interesting stuff.

I look forward to Dixon's Muzzleloading Rifle Faire with great anticipation and excitement right after the conclusion of Fort Frederick Market Faire in April.  I think there's been about 35 of them and I haven't missed one and enjoy meeting the friends I've made over the years.  In my opinion, the addition of the ALR tent(s) and daily demonstrations have improved the Faire tenfold.  I spend as much time talking with and watching the instructors as I do walking around the Faire.  I'm 62 and the adage that you can't teach an old dog new tricks certainly doesn't apply here. A sincere Thank You to you fellows for your time and instruction.  Well done.

While I'd love to attend in person, it would be very difficult between work and geography. There was a thread last week regarding gun shows and travel and it sounded like this may be a common thread... folks who are spread around the country and can't easily attend an event like this in person. I, for one, would be willing to pay for video or some way to attend "virtually." If enough people expressed interest ahead of time, and were willing to put some money where their mouth is, so to speak, I'd expect a lot of the upfront cost could be defrayed. There are companies who specialize in this sort of "simulcast" event for corporate events etc. I admit I don't know what they charge, though.

As always, I immensely enjoyed the Dixon's experience again this year!  Thanks to everyone who stopped by the tent, and / or attended the seminars at the tent.  Lots of interest and great questions.  It would be nice if we had some way of projecting some of the seminars onto a screen for better viewing, I know it was difficult for many to see what was going on with things like carving and wire inlay.  Hopefully, we can address some of these issues going forward.  Thanks again, everyone!  Also, many thanks to Tom (Acer) for organizing & scheduling what was presented at the tent!

Tom and I talked about using a video camera and screen as well as having a projector for presentations.    Technically,  it  wouldn't be all the much of a problem.   All the equipment can be rented.   The real problem is that we would need more substantial and weather proof tents to support and protect the equipment.   I am assuming that would mean a significant additional expenditure.   Given the declining attendance,  I don't think more money would be available.      What we could perhaps do is appoint one or more people to film, and perhaps stream the presentations on YouTube or Facebook.     I really enjoy the videos that Colonial Williamsburg puts on their Facebook page.    It think they use inexpensive cameras or perhaps even smart phones. 

I have a professional camera that can do 1080p.   I am willing to volunteer my time and equipment to do some videos, if we can organize more people to so the same.   i think that we would need two cameras (one with a  long lens, one with a short lens) to cover each presentation so that you can have long shots and closeups.   The video would have to be edited.    Also,  you would have to keep the attendees back from the presentation  area to give the cameras priority access.   That creates more organizational issues.   

I am certainly willing to discuss it and do what I can.

Thanks, Mark.  Mount Vernon does the same thing as CW.  This past July 4, they did a live video in conjunction with our re-enacting unit and had something like 33K views in half an hour.  They did it with an iPhone.  Certainly something we can look into..., thanks.  I agree about the set up and tents, might be logistically challenging.

Mark,
Great to hear you throwing ideas out to the forum about the technical challenges to film, YouTube or produce DVDs for Dixon's. You have so much great photography expertise, I am sure you could "direct" anyone doing an endeavor like this and benefit members across the country that will never be able to attend Dixon's in person whatever the reason. It is great to hear your ideas and look forward to more chiming in on this subject. It might just reach the right person who has the answer already prepared.

Being local to Dixon's, I was just thinking yesterday that I'd be happy to offer to help however I could in some way toward this event.

If this idea of sharing/streaming the ALR tent sessions needs someone to hold cameras or in other ways be another set of hands so that video can be shared with more of ALR, I am happy to volunteer time to assist. I can easily be at the event all three days, and would be willing to help if needed.

I know their is a lot of people that live very far away from dixions.And they may never be able to have the opportunity to make it there.They would appreciate being able to see the videos.You could always ask for donations to help cover the cost.I know I would kick in to help.Maybe they would to.

I delivered this rifle to the grandfather  at Dixon's this weekend.  He in turn gave it to his grandson.  Is this a picture of pure love or what.   These are the kind of people that you meet in this sport of muzzleloading.  Thats why I love this sport so much.   Nuff said !!!

Guys,
I shot cell phone videos of most of Dave Person's demos the last couple of years just because he was putting out so much good information I found it hard to take decent notes.  They are certainly not professional quality camera work since I was shooting hand-held, often over people's heads, but they do have decent sound and passable video .  They are also large (3-8 GB) files so I'm not sure Dennis would want to host them on the ALR site directly.  I guess one possibility is to set up an ALR site on You Tube or some other hosting service, but I have to plead total ignorance about the mechanics/advisability of that.  (I did check with Dave and he has no problem with sharing them on the interweb.)
In any case I'll be happy to share what I have for those who couldn't make it to Dixon's if we can figure out a practical way to do it.
