Lyman GPR flintlock disassembly
« on: August 04, 2017, 02:43:33 AM »
Can anyone instruct me on a safe way to disassemble a Lyman flintlock? I thought I read somewhere about how to do it but I can't seem to find it now.

Ray, are you looking to disassemble the lock?  I can't speak for a GPR, but have disassembled and polished the lock on Lyman deerstalkers

Yes, I want to know how to remove the coil mainspring. I think the Deerstalker and GPR use the same lock.

I don't know if I'm thinking of the right lock but some had a hole in the push rod that is inside of the coil main spring. Cock the lock and put a paper clip in that hole and let the hammer down to release the tension from the main spring.

I sacrificed an old channel lock that opens wide enough for the spring, ground a fork on one end and an "L" shape on the other to allow the pin that rides inside the coil spring to clear when compressing.  It really doesn't take much effort to compress the spring.  I do loosen the two screws on the bridle plate first to work the pin and spring out once compressed.  Just wear safety glasses in case you have an arthritic moment with your hands.

TIP - Disassembly inside a ziplock bag prevents losing parts ...
All of my muzzleloaders will shoot into one ragged hole ALL DAY LONG ... it's just the 2nd or 3rd & other shots that tend to open up my groups ... !

I use those cheap magnetic bowls from Harbor Freight.
