Finished my Hawken

It a was a bucket list type of thing.  I've wanted one since I was  13 and had a TC ordered for me instead of the one I really wanted.  The stock is from a plank.  Parts are a mix of Stith and Track.  I started in the spring.  Finished today.  This one fought me all the way.  IT is a representative rifle, not a copy of any particular one.  Yes, the barrel is blued.  I may change that later.  My research indicates they were originally rust blued.  The wood did not come out dark enough so I used acetylene soot on linseed oil.  It appears the soot was sucked into the pores.  The fake case hardening is heat, cold blue, AF stain and oil.

Nice, love the wood. One of my favorite rifles. The fake case casehardening is interesting I would be interested in your process.

That is a good looking gun, nice wood finish and your inletting is excellent. Hawkens are not easy, looks like you've done your research.

That is a lovely looking Hawken to my eye. The lines look great and that is a delightful finishing job. Is this one a "keeper" or did you build it for someone?  Best wishes, and God Bless,

A most credible rifle!  Your work shows the attention to detail that makes (or breaks) a Hawken rifle.  Don't change a thing...leave the barrel and other metal finish alone.  My compliments on a superlative Hawken rifle, sir.

Yes, your triggers.  The lock is a Davis with a reshaped plate.

Rice- barrel
Track- guard, tang, breech plug, a lot of small stuff
Stith-nose cap, butplate, entry pipe.
Stock- Dunlap blank

Like was said, a tutorial on the metal finish would be awesome!   That looks great!   Looks like nicely aged steel..

I wouldn't touch it either - barrel looks just fine as-is.

Good looking rifle, for a Hawken.  Nice wood, good finish job.
