Range Box Size

I searched, but a lot of pics have gone missing from photo sites.

I am interested in building a range box.  I would like to see pics and also size recommendations.

Height, depth, and width would be helpful.

How big is too big?

How big is big enough?

What should it hold?

My old box was 8"x10"x16".  It worked fine.  My new box, from David Johnson is 9"x10"x18".  I have room to spare for now.  I just loved the look of my new box, and it is rugged.  Nothing wrong with the size of the old one though.  I carry a ton to the range with me as it is a 45 minute drive.  I plan for any emergency, so I can flat carry some junk with me.  I have a tray in the top of both that holds the small plunder.  A fishing tackle or tool box works just fine if looks don't matter.  That's how I started.  Here is the new box by David below.  God Bless,   Marc

The bigger they are the more junk you put in and the heavier they get. I like mine tall enough for a can of powder and long enough so a spotting scope will fit in. A little till on one end or a tray is handy. I like to make boxes. Sorry don't have access to pictures right now.

Johnson makes some great boxes.  They have killer style and very are well done.  But they are "larger".  The good thing about that is you can carry a lot of stuff.  But a smaller box lends to being more of a one caliber box in my opinion.  I started out with smaller ones made by a forum member. Keep all things needed for a 32 and 36 in one box.  All things needed for a 40 in another and things needed for 50 and 58 in the Johnson box.  That means a lot of duplication in flasks, chargers, etc but that's OK.  But if I had but one caliber or no more than two, I would probably want a smaller box.  Funny thing however at some point the object IS the box and NOT the contents!

I made this box recently. 11"tall, 16 3/8 wide, 8 3/8 deep. Used  oak and walnut; hardware from Rockler and a guitar strap.

Spiderman "Mike Medjeski" makes great small/adequate boxes that are priced Right based on quality. To big means to heavy, Mike's carry everything I need for a match. He posts here.

Spiderman Mike makes a great box and at a fair price.  I have 3 of them.  Two small ones a big one and then one of Johnson's.  Like I said, sometimes the box IS the object!!

Charlie, that's a nice box as well.  Nifty little pull out to support the barrel when loading.  And everything is right at your finger tips!

The "pull-out" for loading is really just a "slide in". It is stored under the top for transporting. I made another box with two pull-outs but the weight of the rifle caused them to slide back in. Tried rare earth magnets to hold the loading bracket and they helped some. Finally used a peg through the box to hold the loading bracket.

Made the new box lighter and with a drawer. Like it better than my first effort.

My rifle holder does not attach to the box.  Just the bench.  Two small C-clamps and a wash cloth.  Cheap and functional.  Now you know my secret to safe loading.  LOL.  Marc
