Finishing up #3
« on: August 22, 2017, 04:53:57 PM »
Just finished my 3rd build, and I'm glad to be done. This one fought me the whole way through. The barrel is a Colerain 36"x7/8  .45 caliber. I inherited the siler lock and some other parts from a builder who passed away just this past year. I'm looking forward to shooting the rifle cobbled together with some of his parts at his memorial shoot next month! The brass furniture came from Reeves, and a few other parts from Track. I did make the brass 2 piece muzzle cap. The wood was colored with aqua fortis and trans tint dye then finished with Chambers oil. My goal was to build a slightly shorter rifle with a little weight at the muzzle for freehand shooting out of a tree stand, and I'm happy with the outcome.  Thanks for looking. Tony

Looks like you're well on your way as a holder. What's next?

Tony, Nice Work! I like how you took the sides of the barrel channel down , exposing more of the side flat. A lot of people fail to do this , making the front end look too heavy . Good Job!!    Nate

Thanks Nate. I agree, you have to get that barrel showing.

Nice work, your #3 looks well done. To my eye that cheek rest is a bit far forward but I can see how that might help when shooting from an elevation.

Dave, After your post I looked and, agreed with you . After looking again ,I believe that the cheekpiece is just cut shorter ,from front to back . The front is about where you would expect to see it ,however it is not quite as long as normally seen. JMHO  Nate

Nice job!  Do you have a close up pic of the inlay under the cheek piece?

Well Nate I've changed my mind, now I think it just has a long pull. The front looks right, I can see that in the second pix. Carry on...

I really like the finish, and I'm researching finishing for my first build... so dumb question time, as this is the first mention I've seen of Trans Tint Dye. Can you detail the process? Is it added to the aqua fortis? put on after?

The more I try to figure out finishes the more confused I get.

Trans tint is a wood dye. I used black and dyed the wood jet black then gently sand it back with 320 sand paper to reveal the curl with more contrast. Then apply the aqua fortis. The pictures are of the gun before this one but I did the same process to this one.

Nice looking, I wonder what would have happened if you had applied a Yellow dye first sanded it back then the Black, sanded it back, then the finish? Skipping the AF.
What is the length of pull?

not the same rifle as:

I really like the top one. Too much hook for me in the bottom rifle.

Thanks Tim , I have thought about playing with other colors but it's scarey enough just dyeing the stock black ! Length of pull is 13 3/4"

That is one beautiful rifle. I'm sure everyone who sees it will admire it as much as we do. If it shoots half as good as it looks, consider any deer you get a shot at tagged!
