WW! canvas pouch
« on: August 26, 2017, 12:42:53 AM »
I am about to make a Southern Appalachian pouch circa 1915-1920. I have an original WW1 meat can pouch I will be using. Any ideas on the correct strap material to use for this area and years? which do you gents think would be best for this era? Leather, Hemp or woven strap? Any more material you can think of would be of great help! ;D ;D

I would use a coarse woven material. Either tan or dyed a color of your choosing.

See if you can find an old antique feed sack.  Cut it into strips 4" wide until you have enough length to fit around your body.  Sew them together and then sew the two edges of the strip together.  You now have a tube.  Straighten a coat hanger and run it thru the tube.  Then use it to pull the end thru the tube.  Pound the stitching to flatten it out and center the seam.  Hit it with a steam iron to set everything.  Sew it to your pouch.

This is tanned deerskin, but a cloth one will serve your purpose.
