Show Me Your Small Patch Knives
« on: August 26, 2017, 02:10:44 PM »
I've posted a few small patch knives since recently joining...but most are Not what you would call PC.  As a bladesmith/blacksmith, I'm interested in seeing what y'all carry on your possibles bag...mostly interested in what a period country blacksmith would forge.  Thanks...tippit

Well, mine is not exactly PC, though I did pound on it a bit. It is 01 steel and somehow I got the tempering right, holds an edge but is not brittle. handle is ivory, er bone, yeah thats it bone.

Thanks Robby,
I got some of that bone too...made a knife for a guy that had two grocery bags full of bone slabs  ??? in exchange for three sets.  Haven't used them yet...still waiting to be good enough to put them on one of my knives.

After all the forging I did this week, I've settled on what will be my Patch Knife.  It was right under my nose all the time.  I just didn't recognize it...even posted it here except it wasn't Tea Stained at the time!

Here are a couple of Woodbury patch knives I made in class with Hershel and John House at Canter's Cave a couple years ago. Made one for me and one for my son's hunting bag. Both blades are right at 4 5/8" long. Sorry, but making them PC wasn't a parameter of my third and fourth attempts at knife making.

Here's the three I use.

Top: Ellerbe English trade knife scaled down for a patch knife
Middle: Dennis Miles from old file
Bottom: Tim Crosby, in a southern bearded bag.

Tim,
You're right, I got that bag from TC Albert.  Sorry about that.

Mine was made for me by my friend David when he taught me muzzle loading.  Sharp as a razor with a very thin grind.  He has been shooting many years, and so knows what goes into a good patch knife.  It is my go-to every time I shoot.  Best wishes and God Bless,   Marc
