Any photos of southern rifles with L & R Bailes lock?
« on: August 27, 2017, 02:09:52 AM »
As the title says. I can't decide if the curve at the bottom will be good or bad. I don't want to get halfway through a build and decide I don't like it. Will

I made a .30 cal. Soddy with a 3/4" barrel, using that lock. One of my favorite rifles.

That is a fine looking Southern rifle. That L&R lock looks fine and another would be the Chambers late
Ketland. If they weren't so labor intensive I had thought about making a few of the Ketlands like I made
years ago for the "Flint"Hawken makers.

Robby, what caliber is that rifle? That barrel looks tiny! Very nice, is that walnut? Will

The top one is .50, 50" barrel, walnut stock, and a very good shooter, the lower one is a .36, 42" barrel, hard maple stock, and is a consistent and exceptionally accurate shooter.

The second rifle from the top in the above photo has an L & R Balies lock. Back in 2005 I came across an old Gillespie barrel with the dolls head tang still in it, so I built a rifle for one of my Gillespie family cousins. I am not sure (too long ago) but I think the lock in the top rifle is a Cochran, I remember I had to do a lot of work on it including bushing the tumbler shaft!

Same rifle with the Balies lock (top rifle) you can get a look at the original tang that was in this barrel. Its shaped like a few other Gillespie tangs but not all of theirs looked like this on.

Doesn't look very "cobbled" from the photo.  :-)  For a cobbler, you make a nice looking rifle.   :-D  God Bless,  Marc

Yes Robby- both barrels. The octagonal bl. is .45 and 18" twist and the bright .53 has 60" twist.
The .45 barrel is now a caplock with a drum and nipple and percussion Bailes lock. Makes a nice convertible piece.

That Tn SMR sure does look nice.  Curious, however; None of the other photos show up on my screen.  How are they posted??
