terminology

"short rifle" sounds a bit abstract and contradictory, much like
"pop art"
"fresh frozen" etc.

I'd much rather have a long pistol than a short rifle. 

For any range.

When this range was built years ago it was called the Short Range to differentiate it from the 200 meter Long Range. Then a couple of years ago the club prohibited the shooting of handguns on this Range, hence it became the Short Rifle Range to emphasize the no handguns rule.  But the new sign was too good an opportunity to let go by.
