Horn W/Brass Tacks & Threaded Base
« on: January 21, 2018, 11:34:14 PM »
This one is after a horn shown on page 186 of Jay Hopkin's book; Bone Tipped & Banded Horns Vol I.
It is about 14" around the outside curve and 11 tip to tip. The Maple butt is held in with 12 Brass tacks, it has been threaded 1/2-6 for the Ash plug. Could not find a furniture pull that worked so I used an Iron ring and a Cotter key. The furniture pull is probably a replacement for a fancy turned finial that was originally with the horn. Although the horn pictured in the book has a plain tip I had to put an applied tip on, I cracked the tip while working on it. I poured a Pewter band around it to try and salvage it but it just didn't look right, so it has a tip turned from horn and pinned with Three wooden pegs, the same holds the collar in place.

I modified the one I have so the base/guide is not so thick. I trimmed it Three times:

Trimming it allows the unthreaded portion, the space where the strap would go and the button to be closer to the base. Counter sinking a bit also helps.
 Hope this makes sense.

Great job with that horn Tim. So many interesting features. I remember that one well from Jay's book. Really nice finishes.  Best wishes and God Bless, Marc

I’ve gotta get me a wood lathe. Time to start prowling Craigslist...
