Up coming builds?
« on: September 03, 2017, 02:05:20 AM »
What's everybody lining up to build next? I expect Dave Rase has shot his wad with that last rifle so he probably has nothing planned. ;) I'll post my list of "up comings" in a bit.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I will be starting on a Lancaster rifle for a friend in Texas. Rice ,Chamber`s, Davis , components with a SUPER curly stock , all Sterling inlays , relief and incise carving , etc.  It will be a family heirloom , I look forward to starting ! It is also planned to be used for deer hunting in Texas , as a family "right of passage" the owner is planning for multiple generations to harvest deer on the family ranch with it. I will try to post updates on progress .   Thanks Nate

I just about finished up a Lancaster, so I will be resuming work on my rendition of #43 from RCA, a Christian's Spring Rifle.  It has been on hold while I finish the Lancaster gun.

If that doesn't "count" because I already started it, then my next gun will likely be a generic Kentucky pistol in flintlock.  I bought a pre-carve kit for the pistol about 3 years ago from TOTW, and it needs building.

I've got an Early Lancaster collaboration with Keith Vance of West Liberty Ky. for old Charlie Burton and a walnut stocked York boys gun coming up as soon as I can get back in the shop. I'm getting a total left knee replacement on Thursday 9/7/17.
Can't wait for my next Brooksism!! The last one was a dandy.

I plan on going to Freindship next week to get some inspiration for a new build, and maybe some parts or wood.

Have a generic 54cal 10" smooth Flint pistol in the vice now.  High grade piece of maple. Inletting the barrel by hand and going slow...

Have a 38" 36cal Rice A weight inlet into a maple stick. Planning a Lehigh with it. Need lock and furniture. Unless I do a barn gun.

Have about everything I need to build a Pre-Rev Lancaster. 44" 58cal Hoyt barrel inlet into a nice piece of maple. Chamber's Dale Johnson lock.  It will probably go in next.

Don't know when I will get the pistol done.  Too many hobbies. Lol.

Mike,
Need to finish the loafing shed and water line for the calves I started this spring, then got to build a 2 stall garage(60' x 72' with 16' walls) for my tractor and truck before the snow flies. May have to pour concrete next spring, will see how harvest goes this fall and what is left for daylight hours. Probably run out of friends to help by that time.
Got a couple rifles to finish up too.
A southern chunk rifle with a .50cal, 1 1/2" x 54" Rayl barrel. The tube is inlet and I need to finish shaping the tang. Gonna try over the comb, if I don't break it off. Possibly a Soddy style, TBD.
A half stock rifle in the "Vincent" flavor.
Another half stock with some short architecture for the boys to shoot. Maybe tag some meat with this one when I get the nipple pierced into the drum.
And about a half dozen other guns in various stages, an E.Marshall, another Penny style rifle, two double barrel shotguns. Got the parts to also try a Vogler, that has been on the back burner for a while.
Also got a short sword to finish up. Got a king's crown cap to polish yet.

Currently working on a Mathew Gillespie poor boy with a Rice Southern Classic Barrel in .40 caliber and a Philip Gillespie style percussion rifle with a  13/16" ATF 42" straight octagon barrel in .40 caliber.  I just love those NC rifles, they're addicting.

Southern rifle after the new year and a long pistol before that. Both will have John Bailes locks.

In no order, a Long Land Brown Bess (1730/1740), a cherry stocked Christian Springs rifle, and my version of RCA 26; the "Wetzel Rifle."  I just ordered the barrel from Ed Rayl and will probably use Chris Laubach's new lock on it.

Beginning to whittle again:

40x44a in Curly Ash, TN with Bob Roller Lock and Triggers.
45x44b in Cherry, TN with Durs Egg.
30x46a in Walnut, TN with Bob Roller Lock and Triggers.
36x44a in ? , TN with English lock.

TN for me is: all steel, deep crescent, full tang, fullstock, double set, simple box or hole, poured cap if any, slim, sleek and svelte, etc.

Planning more time to this endeavor right away...  ;)  as much as possible.

When I finish my version of a Traditions Kentucky rifle, I'll start making a new stock for it from a tulip poplar board I made last year.  That will be my first foray into making a stock from a plank.  Also have to replace one of the windows in my daughter's bedroom.

Ok Mike, where's your list???  Inquiring minds want to know ;-)

Walnut stocked Fainot fowler, 20 ga, 46" long barrel, surround side opening patchbox, Chambers early Ketland lock.

I want to make one or two more Fainot pieces, kind of sit in that for a bit. One more fowler and a rifle with the "Gordian knot" carving shine the cheekpiece.

Then I "need" a late flint plains rifle probably based on Philip Creamer's Clark rifle.

A .32 back action with a full stock in cherry for a local charity. A .36, 32" barrel from Rice should be here in October for my daughters Lehigh. That should keep me busy until 2019 😀

I don't know specifics yet, but I have to rebuild a 20 gauge fowler with an un-choked barrel, then build a fowler with a Colerain special turkey choke (walnut stock) and then a curly maple stocked rifle in .45 caliber (Colerain A-weight) in either a late Lancaster style of some sort or a southern mountain rifle.

I'm going to build a Queen Ann secretary this winter. I had the privaledge of measuring/ photgraphing an privately owned original a while back. It's provinance suggests it could have been owned by one of the signers of the declaration of independence. I actually started a full size drawing of it yesterday. It's going to be quite a project.

Indian trade gun with Enfield style percussion lock.  Have most of the parts gathered.  Barrel is a North Star West retrofitted with the bolster and breechplug from a Parker Hale rifled musket barrel.

I built a .40 squirrel rifle, a TC Renegade from random parts, a TC hawken from a very old kit and decided to take a break and make bows for a while.

I have what I think is a TOW Isaac Haynes kit with all the bells and whistles, Rice barrel, upgraded wood and a deluxe Chambers siler lock waiting in the wings when I get inspired again. I picked the kit up cheaply off an archery free classified. Running the parts through TOWs on line order form I came up with $1100 in parts. TOW had already installed the buttplate, sights and cut dovetails for the underlugs which I didn't include in the parts cost. Who ever bought the kit bought every tap and countersink to build the gun as well.

The story I got was some guy bought the kit, didn't have the skills to put it together, kept it a long time the traded it for some vintage bows. The vintage bow owner put it on the archery classified where I found it.

I have a Bucks styled rifle about one third done and a flint pistol half done waiting for my HVAC, electric, and flooring upgrades to be complete. Something to do this winter I guess.

Finish up work for the season, then HUNT, then at some point open the shop and get back to work on stuff.  Got a .36, 48" Rayl barrel in a Maryland mongrel about 3/4 done from last winter, then next a .40 pistol, .58 plains rifle, lots of turkey calls, probably a horn or two.

Next will be a generic 1770s Lancaster rifle for a customer. Then I'm not sure, I have too many parts and projects to decide which is next. At least the last of my pre orders will be done. My grandsons English stalking rifle is about a week from done. The stock is hanging between coats of finish and the barrel is in the sweat box. BJH
