Horn With Four Bands And Pewter Tip Accompained By Pic Of Original
« on: September 03, 2017, 09:14:12 PM »
I received the top Pic on Friday, with a request to make a close copy, the following Pix are what I came up with. I have others that I was working on but this one just seemed to jump out, like, Make It Now.
It is about 10" around the outside curve, tip to tip about 8. The Walnut butt is held by the same 8 wooden pegs that hold the base band in place, staple for strap. The tip is Pewter, pinned on with Two iron pins. The collar band as well as the two others are held in place by Three wooden pegs each.

I sure like it.  It would make a perfect compliment to one of Jim Kibler's kit rifles.  Back in the day, I think the original horn would have been an equal to a Whitson or a Deep River school rifle.  Neat.  Best wishes, and God Bless,   Marc

Tim,
Very nice looking reproduction. Did you stain the horn any? I'm new here. Been out of BP for a # of yrs. Found this site and feel like a kid on Christmas morning. Dug out my T/C Custom 50 cal. And will hunt white tail this year. I had forgotten just how beautiful it is. Making a powder horn has been on my bucket list for years. Thanks for the inspiration Tim.

The color was done with AF. Followed up by Brown Shoe Polish.

Without having the horn in hand it is hard to tell. Whenever, as new or in its life time, whoever put the tip on was skilled. As you can see there is a crack in the original tip and it does not fit right down on the band.
It is a neat horn though.

The original tip repair almost looks like a cap of some sort was driven on then drilled. I have a horn with a similar repair using a thimble.

I really like your version Time. Very homespun and real looking.

Very nicely done. Working from a picture makes it a lot tougher.

Rick that's what I was thinking, like it cracked when it was driven on. What I am trying to figure out is What the tip could have come off/from. I actually thought Thimble.
It is small but here is a shot of the Right side of the tip.
The more unusual the more I like them.

Tim, could it have been a small cane tip or is it to small?       Bob

From the crudeness (and I don't mean to take any thing away from the horn) that would be a good possibility, but there is no way to know. I think we are lucky just to have the horn.
From the simpleness of the bands, varying widths, no turned/carved design there are many things to think about on this horn. Look at the base, first of all it is obviously turned and to a shape that is hard to reproduce. There is no rim on the wood, it fits right inside the horn, the base band does not fit right up to the edge there is a little line of horn showing.  Was this part of the design or did it just come out that way? From what I can see the thickness of the horn at the base is very even. How did they get the horn so uniform, turning it? If so why didn't they fancy up the bands?
Some things we just can't answer, we will never know.

 Tim
