Preventing bore rust
« on: September 12, 2017, 05:27:08 AM »
Due to circumstances beyond my control, parts for my first build sat in my shop for about three months. My shop is only heated/Air Conditioned when I'm in there, its a small separate building. Because of that I slathered the bore pretty heavily with grease, LubriPlate to be precise.
I want to strip that grease out now and protect the bore with something more suitable, while the breech plug is out.
Basically my options for stuff I have available is Mobil 1, Break Free, and T/C Bore Butter Obviously I can purchase something else if need be.
Because I use Bore Butter on my other rifles now, and likely will on this one as well,I'm wondering about using that in the bore to retard any rusting for the extended time until the rifle is finished. Good Idea/Bad Idea?
Recommendations on any other products appreciated as well.

I tried bore butter for shooting but never used it for what you want to do. I didn't like the bore butter for what I used it for but that is just my opinion, others might disagree. I think if I were you I would clean it out of what you have in it now and use any number of good gun oils to protect it until you finish the gun.

I am becoming more and more confident in Fluid Film for all kinds of rustproofing. I have used it for things like your situation with good results.

Take the gun/barrel in the house with you when you're not working on it. That's what I have to do. It's not so bad now that I have gas heat and don't let the shop  go below freezing in the winter anymore. I also store all my barrels in the house as well until I'm ready to start the gun.

I like Barricade made by Birchwood-Casey.  Used to be called Sheath.  There was a test of rust preventatives posted here some time ago.  Search on "rust prevention".

I have used Mobil 1 after cleaning and for storage for many years and have had no problem.

I use bear oil.  I have also used EzOx.  I would think that a high quality gun oil would also be far pr3eferable to something like BoreButter.  That is a black powder fouling softener and bullet lubricant NOT a rust preventative.

RIG Universal gun grease has been a standby for years. I find it protects well but removes readily with a couple of patches.

I'll second RIG. The initials stand for Rust Inhibiting Grease BTW.... I saw a test done years ago by a gun mag where they took about 10 different oils and greases from 3 in 1 oil up to RIG, put them on steel sheets and left them outdoors in Louisiana for two weeks. The uncoated steel plate rusted immediately, others at varying degrees. The only one with no rust was RIG.  Now that was many years ago and there are many new products on the market but I've stuck with RIG and never had any problems.

I appreciate this advice.
I am a bit surprised that Break Free does not seem to have any fans here. Been my go-to lube for my modern guns for years, but this situation is different. Which is why I asked the question.

Leave it as is and bring it inside when not working on it --- ;) All my barrels are inside in my "computer room- metallic cartridge reloading room - craft room - man cave (third bedroom to be exact)" when I am not working on them ;D. My wood is also inside in a closet

I use 3-in-1 oil. I suppose Mobil One would work fine too. Sounds to me like your problem is the periodic heat/cooling cycles in your shop causing condensation. Taking the metal parts inside is probably the answer as Mike said.

Everyone has their way of doing things.

That doesn't mean they are wrong.

I just pulled out some guns that had been stored since 09'.

The bores and exteriors were in perfect shape, not a sign of rust.

These guns were stored in a gun safe with a golden rod dehumidifier .

Prior to being stored they were cleaned and oiled with Barricade.

I'm sure RIG , Bear grease ,3 & 1 and many others products may do the same under the same conditions.

ditto - I always have had a tube of RIG in the shop, but here, it is not necessary.  If I were going away for a long period of time, I would "rig" all my guns for storage.

"Rig" works for me when very heavy duty protection is needed.  I mostly rely on Barricade and trust it.  I also sometimes use BreakFree CLP and like it as well.

I second that.  It also smells nice and leaves my hands soft.  It is lanolin based.  It is very good stuff and is available in chain auto parts stores.

I am one that uses Break Free CLP as a rust preventative for longer term storage.  (Something I probably won't be shooting for 6 more months. )  I use Ballistol for things muzzleloader I use regularly.  Both work for me.  RIG also works but I mostly use it on the exterior metal.

I use Ballistol for general cleaning and protecting.   I use Break-Free as a lubricant on the lock and triggers.    As a general rule,  I run a patch soaked with Ballistol down the bore every six months or so.   As long as i did that,  I haven't had a problem.
