I live in a flintlock dead zone, and a building dead zone
ALR is by far my only resource , I Never get to see a custom
gun besides the internet, and the CLA show once a year,
gets lonely  out in the wilds of Oklahoma
only flintlocks remain interesting..

Hi,
Do folks need a short tutorial on how to use the search function on this forum effectively?

Mike I think a tutorial on lay out would be great. Pretty much making your own pattern.

For a phantom build like my Overthemountain Rifle, I find rifle compared to the original layout/pattern/drawing/stock layout is going to be a little different. In a sense it's taking a life on it's own though historically inspired.

For a bench copy....I see where a pattern can be of benefit.

Grasping this....takes time and understanding the basic craft of building.

That's one thing that is great about this site. New builders can have conversations with more expericaned ones. I'll never forget when Don Getz gave me some advice years ago.....things like this are priceless.

Too this is a great albeit small community where great friends can be made.

Dave,

Not a bad idea, but a lot of our tutorials have been compromised  with the  Photobucket fiasco, the pictures are not there, they have been  blocked out. We need to have fellow members reinstall the tutorials with pictures, if that's  possible.

It would be great to have regional get togethers. I know there are some in Kentucky and once in a while at the Log Cabin (thanks  to Bill Pac) but it would be nice to meet and greet other members that are local to where one lives.

This is the best site ever and my thanks go out to the moderators and administrator for doing such a good job.  I think it would be helpful to most of us if the profiles required an age and general location.

I love this site, I find it to be a valuable resource for me. I will find a gun in RCA or another publication that I want to know more about and search for it. I find that in addition to historical data on the gun or maker I usually find a contemporary builder who has provided his take on the subject matter in the builder's section. Only disappointment is that many of the photos are now gone from the threads even in the tutorial section. Is there anyway to get them back from photo bucket?
I do not really know how photo bucket worked having never tried to use it myself. I would be willing to donate funds to ALR to pay their fees if it would help get the pictures back that are missing.
Darthur

I share your pain! Wish it were that simple where I could just elect to pay PhotoBucket's ransom but the $399 annual fee must be paid by the owner of the Photo Bucket account and that would mean each member that has photos here would have to pay Photo Bucket in order for their photos to appear on ALR. Don't think that's going to happen!

I"ve asked before but I'll try again, a longrifles afield/hunting section, maybe a subheading under the BP Shooting forum?  All the hunting threads get spread between OTBF, BPShooting and gun building.

Dennis,
Thanks for the explanation, that really is extortion isn't it?

Get-togethers and meet and greets are always good. We used to do that periodically for bow making. Everybody would bring their current project  and work on it. We focused more on building bows, knapping flint and showing each other building techniques than shooting them but we did shoot at times. Like a mini rendezvous for day or two. I really enjoyed them.

Well I don't know if this is the best site or not as this is the only one Iv'e ever visited. I have been so impressed with the quality of respondents replies, questions and the administration that I feel I don't need to look any further than right here. The generosity of everyone to share is over the top. Thanks for the chance to be a part of it.    :)

Guys,

A one day get-together is not that hard to put together.  The hardest part, and it's not that hard, is to find a location.  What's in your area?  State park, historical site, public library, an ALR member's shop.  Go visit in person and talk to the manager.  Check the calendar and avoid dates like holidays, or when the home team is having a game, Super Bowl Sunday, etc.  Is there a restaurant nearby, or have everyone bring a sack lunch.  Post a notice here on ALR.  Ask guys to bring stuff, that's the key.  Ya gotta have something to talk about, buy, sell, or trade.  Have fun.  The next thing ya know people will be asking if you're going to have another get-together next year.

And, yes, we will be getting together at Ft. Boonesborough on Saturday, January 27, 2018.  I think this will be our 8 or 9th year.  Bring stuff to look at.

I went to one at a museum in Louieville a few years ago and had a great time. I may make the one at Ft.  Boonesborough this up and coming January since we're not going down Florida way. Thanks, Irma...

I been kicked off all the others.... :P

Don't believe there's any chance of that occurring on this one.  This is only one of two sites I know of where there is a friendly and learning atmosphere; but then, I'm a moderator on the other one.  :o ::) ???

Mike if you have never been to the U.P. or Northern Michigan you are in for a treat. It beats the heck out of locusts trees an corn stalks to look at.....!!!  Now getting together sounds great but how far would everyone want to drive for a one day get together.
That's why the CLA show works for so many.IMHO  Oldtravler

How to help grow the site... membership... interest in muzzleloading... etc...

Several years ago I was looking on-line about how to heat treat springs. Believe it or not, no matter how I typed my Google search, I kept landing on a forum site for some on-line... role-playing... pirate... video game. Apparently those people really get into their role playing... right down to heat treating specifics for flintlock main springs.

This may seem geeky, but I would say the better your tags... the more people will find you in a web search. That's how I found you. I didn't know ALR existed before I did some muzzleloading-related web search.
