I have been tanning for more than 40 years. Brain tan, bark tan both. It ain’t rocket science, but it is work. Lots of work. I learned something new from each hide I did. My methods changed and evolved with almost each one. I recommend braintan deer skin for clothing. It will last a long time. Longer than any other skin.
Once you finish your skins , the real work begins— making your clothes. These are not words of discouragement, just a reality check. I have worn braintan buckskin clothes for years, and can say unequivocally—there’s that word again
— that the effort is worth it. Also I recommend six hides for a coat or jacket—you’ll see why once you start . There is much more to this process than can be covered in any one single post. If you are interested in more information, send me a PM, we can discuss. Hope this helps. —JB
