Rebuilding the Forum

Having read several recent posts about the worth of this forum.....and how much the whole PhotoBucket fiasco has hurt the value of what so many have dedicated so much time to sharing, I have started to replace every photo in every one of my posts.  It is laborious.  It takes a lot of time.  And my photos are certainly not the most valuable or noteworthy ones that have been posted here over the years.  However, lately I have received emails from several people requesting the missing photos in this or that post.  And in trying to send them the missing photos, I discovered that it was just as easy to re-post them in place of the ones PhotoBucket is holding hostage.  In addition, since my memory is not as good as it once was, I had forgotten how often I go back to my own posts just to see how I did something.  So, for what it may be worth to anyone, I started at the latest posts and am going through them one at a time to replace every photo I can find......

OK.....not quite..... 

Just to break up the monotony of reposting the latest pictures, I also started at the far end....posts from 9 years ago.....so I am working from both ends towards the middle.....sort of like burning your candle at both ends...

Hi Dave,
Your posts are very important and I think a lot of folks appreciate your going back and reposting photos.  I am slowly doing the same starting with any tutorials I did and then focusing on the gun building section.  Good luck, Dave, and thank you for taking the time to repair old posts.

A very nice thing to do,I too try to go back to look at old posts for advise on things and pictures are worth a thousand words.It is a bummer seeing nothing because of photo buckets nonsense.I also know for one to go back and redo all their photos is one heck of an undertaking,thanks.

Thanks for the effort of replacing the photos!  I know they teach me a lot and each time I see the beautiful work that is being done by the forum I have to set my goals a little higher.  Thanks

As a new builder, I can say that your efforts are appreciated. It is difficult to grasp the whole concept of some things with just text. Try weighting  down how to tie your shoos😋

Davec2 and Smart dog, Thank you both for making the commitment to restore your photos.  Your posts and tutorials are some of the most valuable content on ALR. 

I've been working on replacing my photos too.  I do a few old posts each time I login.  My work is not on the level of Davec2 or Smart dog, but I have posted a lot of pictures of my mistakes and asked how to fix them.

I would urge each member of ALR to restore your photos if you can.  You may not think your photos are important, but they are.

I go in for hernia surgery on Sept. 22.  I plan on working on updating the pictures in my posts during my recovery period.  Being limited to 10 lbs for 4 weeks ought to give me plenty of time to update photos.

 I was lucky enough that my wife who used to use my Photobucket account for her art classes at one time bought additional space so my Pix with links to PB are still up. They, PB notified me that they will continue to be accessible until Aug 2018, at that time I will have to pay the ransom, ain't gonna happen.
 I have some time but I am going to try and repost all of my Tutorials, there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 Pix in them. As for my posts in Accouterments, there are over 400 threads all containing Pix, I may just have to let them go. I apologize for that, I lost a hard drive that had a lot of the Pix on it so they are not retrievable.
 If somewhere along the line you come across any of my posts where the Pix are missing Email me and I will see if I can find them for you.
 My thanks to everyone who has posted Pix in the past, I realize that some of them are gone for good. And I want to Thank all who have the ability to repost their Pix. This site will continue to grow with the addition of new posts whether with or without Pix.

And I think folks understand that some are gone for good,at least I do.To ask someone to go back and redo five,ten whatever years photos is way to much to ask of someone.Any redone posts with photos should be appreciated.

It would be better if the information of the tutorials were made into pdf format.  Once in pdf format, photo"bucket" can chew nails, as they are no longer the hosting site of the photos. 

I use Open Office, a free word processing program like Microsoft Word.  Make a document, then I convert it to a pdf.

I try re-posting photos as well.  It IS quite frustrating.  Another frustrating thing is that many of the posted photos that draw comments do not show up on my computer.  Some photos DO show up and that's great.  But even when a link is posted, it only brings up MY imgBB photos.

Pdf files are fine for tutorials but we don't necessarily have to go that route. I had our hosting service upgraded and with that came more disk space, enough to allow the photos for tutorials to be resident on ALR but NOT enough to host all  normal topic photos that members post daily.
If anyone has a tutorial that they want posted please contact me or one of the moderators and we will discuss what we can do.

As a new member I want to thank all of those reposting their pictures.  I've been going back through the old posts and often find that pictures of something I want to see are not available. I recently posted some pictures on the forum and found it easy to do so thanks for making that change also. I not only have my own pictures on the computer hard drive but I also download them to a USB thumb drive so that  if the hard drive goes belly up I have another place to store them. This is a great place, so much information available.

I use my web site and Amazon S3 storage as a source for the photos for my posts.   Consequently,  it is not likely that the links will be broken.  However, it is possible, as I do occasionally change my web site.    If anybody runs across a post of mine that has broken links,  PM me and I will fix it.

My hat is off to all the Great Builders & Teachers on this site that are so unselfishly willing to share their knowledge and time to help all of us beginners out.  I and all those true to this site are very grateful for all the efforts to overcome the knowledge that Photo Bucket has so rudely erased from this site in one fell swoop! I, for one, and am sure all others very much appreciate all those efforts to rebuild photos in tutorials and posts by those making this time consuming effort. Realistically, we know all will not be able to be rebuilt for one reason or another but really appreciate those that can. We can always learn from words but photos tell the real story and reinforce the words. Many of us learn from pictures better than words and that is why the rebuild is so important. Thanks to all of you all making the effort to rebuild our Great Site.
