I just returned from the Championship Shoot at Friendship where I witnessed history made on the pistol line.  A kid from Tennesse broke the Championship record  that has stood since 1964.     The kid was phenominal to watch.  Percussion or flint, no matter the range, his groups were one ragged hole in the black!

Great shooting,wonder if he can do it when its not just paper looking back at him?Not that it really matters but knew a fellow once,great shot as well but couldn't hold steady when he pointed the muzzle at critters.No dig against the kid,just curious is all.Either way very impressive shooting.

That's him.  Charlie came with him to witness the feat.

To Crawdad;  the championship requires shooting a flintlock pistol, a percussion pistol, and a revolver at ranges of 25 and 50 yds and a limited time fire target for each pistol at 25 yds.

To old traveler;  You got that right!  I'm hoping to do better next year when my cataracts have been removed.

He probably wasn't using  the pistol as a weapon, probably using it  more as   a sporting/target gun.
  Congrats to him, that "was" a long standing record.

I've taken deer with a traditional flint rifle before. And not to step out of bounds for the forums intended discussion topic but I've taken a doe at 80 yards in the back of the head because that's the only shot there was. Tall uncut hay field. She ran out in front of me and I swung on her just to watch her disappear into the grass. She came up on the other side and stoped moments later. Bad idea. Shot was not taken with a traditional muzzleloader. But the equipment had its own limitations making the shot respectable.

Friendship was a lot of fun this year. I got to see some wonderful people, good food, great shooters, and some awesome craftsman. Thanks for mention here L. Akers.

Jason, I apologize for refering to you as "a kid" but I didn't want to put your name out here without your permission.
 
For the rest of you folks' information, the old record was 954 with 35 x's out of a possible 1000.  Jason shot a 956 with 40-some x's.  Imagine, he dropped only 44 points out of 1000 over 10 matches.  I drop that many in ONE match.  I don't expect the new record to last very long--certainly not 50 years--I expect him to better his own record pretty soon.  Oh, he also qualified as a Distinguished High Master shooter--an enviable achievment in it's self.

Jason, when things get settled down at home you might be able to take more than two days off of work; then you can shoot both the 1000 point AND the Traditional Agg.

His agg guns were  a Yazel .36 caplock, a Hageman .32 flint, and a Pietta .44 revolver.

Oh yeah, of more traditional guns he was shooting an 1851 .36 pretty well also.

Oh shoot so sorry I missed your question. Thanks Dave for stepping in there I totally missed that! Dave answered correctly but we gotta tread lightly here the guns are not per this forums intentions. I've ben reluctant to get into much detail on them.

I am however VERY interested in having someone build me a set of traditional pistols. A cap lock and a matching flint lock. I was thinking more of a french design. No ramrod on the gun. Single set triggers of course. I'd like em in .36 caliber preferably to shoot a .350 ball.

I know what you mean Jason with the forum rules. I'm just interested in that sort of thing. I just wish when I was competing I would have asked the other competitors what they were shooting, the builder, the barrels, locks and triggers keeping a record of it.

Sort of like the Manufacturers Award given in Formula One racing every year. 

My hats off to you Jason. I never could shot off hand and really admire anyone who can especially at your level.

The mortimer is not legal for NMLRA Traditional agg matches. Plow handle only. So the Le Page would be fine. I've never cared for the flare at the end of the stock under the barrel however.

Jason, congratulations on the fine shooting, and welcome to the ALR forum.  I think you will find this is a great place to hang out and learn.

I believe a few members here can help outfit you with a matched set of flint and caplock pistols.  We have some really talented builders on this forum.

It's good to see new people come into the sport.  I'm fairly new myself, and someday I plan to compete in Friendship.

Here is another one.

All of the original French empire period dueling pistols the Pedersoli Lepage Daryl posted (second gun) is based on that I've been able to examine have fit my hand excellently and pointed very naturally. I've never really found the saw handle style to feel that great, in part because they tend to have rather heavy barrels. They do look cool. I haven't shot any of them, so I can't speak to that.
