All I can say is that all the rifles pictured can park their shoes under my bed anytime. 

And the deer & squirrels are causing me to drool.

Deer I shot in January with cherry stocked .58... Thought it was a doe, turned out a young forkhorn that had dropped his antlers already... Lots of good meat and a nice hide.

Well, when I recovered the "nice-sized doe" and flipped it over for field dressing, surprise, surprise... it's a buck.  Went back and looked at a bunch of trail cam photos my dad had back at the cabin, and figured out which young buck it was.  The bummer is I coulda used those little antlers for powder measures or something if he hadn't cheated me out of 'em by ditching them early!

Posted this in another thread, decided to post it here too!

Had a successful hunt this past weekend, killed a nice young buck with my Bucks county styled rifle. Shot centered the brisket and pierced the heart, quick, clean kill. Really all I could hope for!
What a thrill, even after 47 years of hunting it still gets my heart trip hammering! Never gets old big game or small.
I hope everyone has as satisfying and successful season.

Last day of January muzzleloader season, 2005. The .495 ball passed through both lungs on the doe and both lungs on the fawn standing (unseen) beside her. Found the flattened ball just under the hide on the far side of the fawn.

Took this nice doe Saturday in VA. First deer with a flintlock, first rifle I have built. Cherry stocked .45 with roundball over wasps nest wad and 60 grains of ffg. Would like to post pictures of the finish rifle to get critques, as I was trying for a Virginia style rifle. I guess those belong in a different forum though.

I thought that I had this one posted, but don't see it.  2013 Virginia, quartering towards me, 60 yards offhand, dropped like a rock!  Impact was midway up the neck shoulder junction, 100gr fffg and .605" PRB.

Got back from WV Sunday evening.  Bummer!  Saw a few deer but not one would give me a shot.  The fun thing was - saw two bears - an enormously fat bear we were watching decided to check the two of us out while we sat on a bank.  He ambled over toward us and stopped maybe 30 yards away to study us before continuing on his way.  He was still hanging around when we left as light was fading.  My partner got video.

Here are pictures from my "Diamond Mountain Mule Deer Hunt" of September, 2014.  I posted this in "Over the Back Fence" but it is no longer there.  It is also in Muzzleloader Magazine for July/August 2015.  My rifle is a .58 caliber I built, styled after a Hawken and I was shooting 110 grains of Goex 2F and a roundball.

Thanks for the pictures, Herb. sometimes guys back East do not understand what hunting in the West can entail. It's the unknown ranges and need for a flattened trajectory that

50 to 80 gr. charges cannot give.

Good job Herb. Looking over that country convinces me that parade loads are "good enuff" for close rang shots like woodlands but on the prairies and wide open spaces like you hunt a more robust load is probably a better choice.

I've been meaning to try posting a photo here. There are no feathers, antlers or hair included, but I thought other folks might get a kick out of last Friday when I "took my rifle for a walk."
Sure adds a little spice to the hunt.

Thanks Brice. That was the biggest bodied deer i've ever shot. Broad side shot at about 20 yards with a 54 , 80 grains of 3f powder and a 535 ball. Hit right behind the shoulder and the ball didnt exit. He went about 75 yards before i heard him crash in the brush. Before he died he was kind enough to cross a small dry creek , with very steep banks about chest deep, and jump a fence. Had lots of fun dragging him to a trail.

You only need the bigger charges if you hunt the plains out west like Herb. Hunt the mountain timber out west and the 80gr charges are perfect. It's a matter of picking the terrain you want to hunt and match the load to it.

Personally, I love the thick dark timber. I never hunt the plains.

Here is my November 16, 2017, Missouri buck.  My .54 cal. flintlock was made by Shane Emig (Cabin Creek).  I used 90 grains of 2F.  Shot was 53 yards, and the buck ran 125 yards before dropping.

    Great pic's everyone,  I was hoping to post mine but after 10 hours in the fog, drizzle, mist and whatever else there was, my buck walked away.   60 yards standing broadside and even though I changed priming several times throughout the the day and kept my lock covered I still wound up with three Klatches, wiped out primer and picked again then reprimed then I got a flash and a fizzle but no boom.   By then the buck had enough of my embarrassment  and trotted off.   No more priming with 4F in fowl weather,  picking the flash hole must have contaminated the main charge because I had to pull the ball that night and then use my ball puller to pick away at caked up powder.  Oh well, better luck next year, now it's back to small game with my light flinter.
